Re: Who's Next in Line Behind Saban? Johnson, Grobe, or someone else?
Oh no...I dont know how to do the "quote" stuff so I'll have to muddle through the previous questions as best I can. Forgive me.
dabaxter asked: Hawk,
What do you think about the NCAA, Navy and Hawaii records that Paul Johnson has broken or holds?
What are your thoughts? Do you believe those are just flukes?
My personal feeling refer only to PJ's record as a head coach. They aren't flukes. I think he did well at the Div 1-AA level. But at Navy, his wins are mostly against patsies. (I know I use that term a lot, but its the best description I can think of). IMO, I give NAVY's tradition and ability more credit and don't look at them as a mere patsie themselves. Or at least, they shouldn't be. Maybe I'm looking at Navy with Haze Grey-colored glasses. Lol! But I feel that if PJ is as good as advertised, he should be whipping some mid-majors anyway.

Unfortunately, your last post regarding Paul Johnson was probably the least convincing argument I've read on any subject in quite some time.
I am not trying to be combative or argumentative when I say this because it is obvious that you have given Paul Johnson's candidacy some serious consideration, but you should really do a bit more research.
The only thing that has kept Paul Johnson down is that he has been labled an "option guy". He has a .744 winning percentage that is 15th among active coaches. (Of note: Tommy Tubberville is #33 at .644 WP) Johnson has this winning percentage despite inheriting a mess at Navy and losing 10 games his first year.
You speak of losses against ND. If Johnson weren't blackballed as an option guy, he might not be coaching against ND...he might be coaching them. RTR.Hey, i remember you! Why'd you change your name? I enjoyed your posts.
IMO, Paul Johnson
wouldnt be the very
worst coach we could hire. He'd get some wins here and might luck out and upset a major rival once in awhile. But I'm glad you mentioned the bit about him being labeled an option guy. Seems to me that a lot of very good colleges would have PJ high on their lists if they truly believed he could get the job done. But
Notre Dame didnt hire him even after having to scramble to find a coach (remember Urban Myer turned em down).
Washington didnt hire him a couple of years ago.
North Carolina and
NC State didnt hire him.
Nebraska had a chance to get him a few years ago and they LOVE running out there. Miami of Ohio had a chance at him too, but passed. And...of course,
Ohio State passed him over back when they hired Jim Tressel. So doesn't it make sense that those schools have a good reason to pass this guy over?
His brand of option attack is not very popular anymore. 10 years ago it was. I loved the Triple option! IMO it used to be the most brilliant offense ever designed for the college game. But not anymore. QB's want to survive these days to get to the next level. And
pure option QB's dont make it to the pros very often these days. (Vice Young ran a different type of option attack).

Coach Johnson has done fair against Notre Dame. In the last five years Notre Dame has beaten 26 teams by scoring 40+ or more points in those games and all are Div I teams.
For Example:
Sep 2006
Notre Dame 41 Penn St. 17 I wasn't aware Penn St. was Div II or any other of the 25 teams that lost in this fashion.
Notre Dame has beaten 66 percent of its DIV I teams by more than 27 points in its history. ND has only beat Navy 33 percent of the time by 27 points or more.*Grin* 77 points is your definition of being crushed. 77 points is my definition of being
ground into dust and having one's nose rubbed into it. (I felt also that there was a message from the friend of Bama committee being sent along with that one).
No, my definition of being crushed is probably being beaten handily on the gridiron despite what the final outcome was. You know yourself that a lot of times the score in games doesn't accurate relflect the actual events in a game.
You've done my work for me by listing SIX times Navy has been whipped by Notre Dame. And 5 of those 6.....he's been whipped thoroughly and completely. Furthermore, doesn't it bother you that this guy has lost to the teams I mentioned earlier in the thread? Forget Notre Dame then. Navy really should have
whipped Massachusets. No excuse for not giving them a complete thrashing. He probably should have dominated East Carolina too. And Tulane. Those are not good football teams imo. They arent even mid-majors. And those type of games are the ones that scare me more than any of the Notre Dame games.
