Something has to change with our basketball environment/program....

The problem the past few years has been the same as the problem we've had in football -- the team just simply doesn't improve as the season wears on. Bama plays lights-out in December and gets ranked in the top 10, top 5, even #1. Then by the time March rolls around everyone else passes us by. The Elite 8 run from a couple of years ago was great, but it's obvious now that it was a flukey thing. More often, we've been bounced early by a lower seed.

like last year when we upset Marquette before losing to eventual NC runner-up UCLA...two times...TWO TIMES out of the 5 tournaments CMG has taken us to we've been bounced by a lower seed...that's two out of five that's not more often...come on...at least know what you're speaking on before you pronounce the gloom and doom.

2002 (#2 seed, SEC champion) - Beat Fla. Atlantic in 1st round, lost to Kent State in second round. Highest AP ranking #5 on Feb. 18, still #8 by tourney time.

2003 (#10 seed, highest AP ranking #1 on December 30) - Lost to Indiana in 1st round. Highest AP ranking #1 on December 30; unranked by tourney time.

2004 (#8 seed) - Elite 8 year - Beat SIU, Stanford, Syracuse, lost to eventual National Champion UConn. Never ranked by AP prior to tourney.

2005 (#5 seed) - Lost to Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1st round. Highest AP ranking #11 on Jan. 31, ranked #21 by tourney.

2006 (#10 seed) - Beat Marquette in 1st round, lost to eventual National Champion UCLA. Highest AP ranking #19 on Nov. 28; unranked by tourney.

So you're right, we only lost to a lower seed in 2 out of 5 years. We also lost in the first round in 2 of 5 years, and we only made it past the first weekend in 1 of 5 years.

In 3 of 5 years (2003, 2005, and 2006) we peaked in the rankings before the end of January then fizzled down the stretch in February, causing lower NCAA seeds and tougher competition.

The one "great" year (2004) followed the poorest regular season we've had. In 2002, 2003, and 2005, I say the team underachieved in the tournament given the regular season performance and expectations. Last year we probably finished up about where we should have.

This year, after being preseason #11 and peaking at #4, we likely won't even make the NCAA's. I think there's plenty of evidence to suggest that the b-ball team under Gottfried, like the football team under Shula, has not lived up to its potential.

I have waited to settle down before posting in this topic. I feel the biggest thing that needs to change is CMG. Mike is an excellent recruiter without a doubt. However, in my opinion the players do not seem to improve as much as they should from their freshman to senior year.

Furthermore, it seems the CMG teams come out flat and without emotion way too often. I blame that 100% on the coach. When you look at CMG on the bench he appears to be a walking zombie a lot of the time. I am not syaing I want of raving lunatic on the sidelines but, it would be nice to see a little passion every once in a while.

In addition, look at the number of players that have left the program over the past several years. Yes, you will have people leave for various reasons. However, I think the number that has left BAMA should open some eyes to major problems in the program.

CMG has upgraded our talent level and schedule during his tenure. Now, we need to find an established coach who can take us to the next level. Of course, it would take spending $1.5 - $2.0 million per year but, imagine Billy Gillispie, John Calipari, or Rick Pitino coaching BAMA.

Their is no reason BAMA can not have one of the top coaches in basketball and football.

Now, with all of that said as long as CMG is the head coach I root for him and hope he continues to grow into a top notch coach. However, I am affraid all we will ever be under CMG is a team that makes the tourney 7 out of 10 years. Out of those 7 appearances we will lose in the 1st 2 rounds 6 times and make the sweet 16 or elite 8 1 time. I think we should expect more than going .500 in conference and lose in the opening weekend of the tourney.

I have to disagree with you there...CMG is the first Bama coach EVER to take us to the elite eight and he has us flirting with being a national powerhouse. I don't think you can say our success is in the past with that kind of present.

Year after year Bama is a perineal tease. CMG took us to the elite 8 one year. Ok....good. Are you excited about the direction of the team right now?

Well...obviously this year has been dissapointing...but overall I would say yes...I am excited about the direction of the team. I think that we are in a stage right now where we are kind of in between being a decent team and being a powerhouse. I mean think of where we were when CMG took over...we have improved...and the talent is there now. I do think that things haven't panned out this year and that we've had a couple seasons in which we underachieved (the year we lost to Kent State in the 2nd round and the year we lost to Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the first round) other than that I think CMG is doing a good job with the program as a whole. I'm just as dissapointed as anyone with the results of this season but I think...as many reporters are saying across the country...Bama deserves a pass this year. All the off-court problems that we've had to endure this season...and hey, we've got a very young team. 4 Jrs, only ONE senior, and 9 Freshmen and sophomores http://www.rolltide.com/SportSelect...033&DB_OEM_ID=8000&SORT_ORDER=1&Q_SEASON=2006 according to rolltide.com. I just don't think that THIS of all seasons should be the season where everyone is calling for CMGs job. Let's see what he does with the plethera (sp?) of youthful talent over the next couple of years. I happen to believe we are very close to becoming a powerhouse and that CMG is the man to take us to that level. I understand some of the points people are making but I got a little frustrated because some people were getting on here and saying incorrect stats like they were facts. It almost seems like some people are trying to make the situation worse than it actually is by twisting the facts...either that or they actually just didn't know what they were talking about and decided to slam CMG because they were upset. I don't know...either way, I stand behing CMG and I think that we will see a marked improvement next year...oh yeah...and this year's not over quite yet either.

ROLL TIDE

God some of you yall fans need to get a reality check when it comes to firing coaches. Our school is not a great job nationally. Think about it. Alabama BASKETBALL. It would be nothing but foolish to already consider firing CMG. Foolish. What proven great coaches would come here??? none.

OK when has CMG ever gotten Bama an impressive run in the SEC tourney unlike Wimp almost every year and then most years had his teams outplaying almost everyone. You will never say that about CMG teams. One thing is certain this is a comment you will never hear about Bama basketball while CMG is the coach---this team outcoaches and outplays the teams they play---YOU WILL NEVER HEAR THIS because he is not a very good coach. CMG is average at best and will keep this program that way. CMG got Bama out of the Hobbs years just like CMS got Bama through the probation years---but why cant everyone realize this basketball program will not go any further with CMG as Head Coach. The problem is that most everyone only cares about football and that includes the admin. Mal saw that CMS would not get the football program any further ahead than it was(and he made the move)--he needs to see that with CMG. I dont see any programs knocking on CMG door to hire him away. Name one player he has turned into a better player, how many NBA players has he developed? Heck how many players does he lose because he will only play 7 players each and every year? Oh yea I forgot--he made it to the Elite 8 and had a team ranked #1. The ranking surely didnt matter(only matters if they stay there) and didnt last long, and the player that carried the team to the Elite 8 because he just wanted it more, was not even recruited--it surely wasn't coaching. CMG cant even keep the best player in the state each and every year. Come on CMG is not the answer for getting to the next level--I thank him for what he has done but it is time to get this program to the next level and that will not happen with CMG.

Bama can get a better coach than CMG. There are several coaches better than CMG at smaller schools that would jump at the chance. Heck Kevin Stallings is a better caoch than CMG and I bet he would come as would Pelphrey, TR Dunn, Davis, and Anderson. BUt I beleieve the right amount of Money would get the right caoch. Hells bells, Texas Tech went out and got Bobby Knight! I can name a bunch of coaches better than CMG----I agree though that the program might not graduate as many players than CMG has and CMG is family but it is time to get this program to the next level.

Yeah, but what you fail to mention about the Elite 8 year is this: Take away a miraculous last second shot from Pettway to win against SIU, and we get bounced in the first round....again. That equals fluke. Face it. Gottfried rarely gets us past the second round.

boy...when it rains it pours man. Where were all you people in January...oh yeah...nobody was trashing CMG when we were doing good. But now that the team is down everyone's hopping on the bandwagon and saying that he's always been horrible. Fairweather it is not right now...but I still say ROLL TIDE!

You must not have been on the board long. People having been pointing these things out for many seasons now.

That may be true...you're right I've only been here since October...but since October I have been coming on the basketball board to read about the basketball team and not until the last month or so have I started reading all this negativity. Obviously most of it is stapled to the disapointing season, I guess it all just kind of hit me like a freight train...I mean for awhile all I read was positive things about the team...before the season I started a thread just asking what everyone thought about the team this year and NOT ONE person said anything about how Gottfried was gonna blow it or whatever. but now that the team's down everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon of "Gottfried sucks" or whatever. I'm just wondering where all this anti-Gottfried sentiment was at the beginnning of the year.

whatever man...welcome to March madness...have you ever seen the tournament? It's filled with last second shots and teams playing over their ability level...but I guess the glass is half empty...it's not that SIU played better, but rather that we had a fluky run.

I am just saying this happens every year. Every year we start out with high expectations only to see it all flushed down the toilet.

the students should be closer to the court. players do feed off of the crowd's enthusiasm.
Wimp could light a fire under his team, and would rather get run over by a train than lose to auburn.
Ronald Steele, despite his skills cannot play on one leg. he should have been afforded an opportunity to heal, and allow the other players to improve and develop chemistry.
Bama could also use an Antone Pettway type player who did not accept losing.

It doesn't matter where the students are when you win 85% of the games in the building. :)

You are missing the point. It is not about our sheer record at home. Its about changing the culture of Alabama Basketball. Watching a game in Colman is laughable. During the majority of the game my high school gym is literally louder. The atmosphere is terrible. I am sorry, it is the worse atmosphere I have ever experienced for a college basketball games. Maybe our students don’t know anything different, but marks madness is a joke. They don’t yell the entire time the other team is on offense. They barely make any noise. Maybe i should just come to the realization that nothing is going to change. The games would be much more fun for students and alumni if we changed the seating assignments. As well as the intensity around the basketball program as well as home games themself’s would magnify
