We will feel the effects of this for months/years, as they work their way through the system.

An American manufacturing company makes American widgets. The stuff that goes into the making of the widgets are Chinese-made whatnots. Right now the American company has a store of already-imported whatnots, when those run out, they will have to import the now-more expensive Chinese whatnots. Or, ..

I see he was just quoted saying the goal is to replace income tax which is impossible.

Once again proving that Dictator Trump has no clue at all how tariffs work.

You would think that someone who claims to be genius businessman would understand how businesses work.

Truth is he is not a smart businessman. Most of the businesses he has started have failed and many of the buildings with his name are not his properties but have licensed the use of his name. Thanks to the Apprentice TV show, he has conned the American public into thinking he is a mastermind at business.

This whole episode reminds of a "Leroy Jenkins,"* just in an economic arena.
A bunch of policy wonks standing around talking about how they should prep and how they should act when the time comes, and then here comes "Leroy Jenkins!" who rushes into the fray without a thought as to prep and consequences.
A Leroy Jenkins reference on TF, and in the politics board no less. The gamer in me is very proud right now.

Dumbest thing I've read this morning (but the day is young!)

These morons really don't get the difference between inflation and tariffs.

What they're saying: "Why didn't Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?" Leavitt questioned.

When we run out of these I'm storming the Capital...

Exactly, but it is right here that his fan club hangs on his every word and will never admit the truth of themselves come back with, “Well, he’s richer than you are and did better than you have!”

Well, I wasn’t born a millionaire in the first place, so that’s hardly a fair comparison.

I did not want Ross Perot as my president either, but there is an example of a successful businessman who ran for president. Yes, he had some of the same characteristics that are distasteful in Trump, but the difference was that he actually served in the military, was married to the same woman for 63 years, and was an actual example of a successful businessman. He also was involved in trying to get American POW‘s and MIA is accounted for from Vietnam as opposed to calling them suckers and losers.

Well now it is being reported Trump personally called Bezos and Amazon is now not listing the tarrifs on the 'main site' whatever that means.

I certainly didn't have a problem with Amazon's new policy before it got canned. It would have been super helpful with identifying American-owned companies and business that I would prefer to support.

And that would work to accomplish Trump's stated goals...

Waitaminute...is it possible that he's been lying to us about his goals?

So do we pay sales tax on the tariff? If so, the cost of the item will essentially be +160% to me. We may have to throw some tea overboard to get some people's attention on this...

So. Much. Winning.

Temu shoppers are in for a sticker shock at checkout. Over the weekend, the ultracheap Chinese e-commerce giant started listing “import charges” as high as 145 percent during the final payment steps, according to CNBC. That means many of its items have doubled in price, like an $18.47 summer dress that CNBC says jumped up to $44.68 after charges and a $12.44 children’s bathing suit that ended up costing $31.12.

So serious question what are you guys buying to prep for the upcoming shortages? Was reading some pretty dire reports from the west coast (empty cargo ships, ports shutting down, workers being laid off, warehouse leases being cancelled, etc.). It said the same thing I posted earlier 3-4 weeks and shortages from things coming from China are going to start being visible on shelves.

I just told the wife to make sure the kids were all stocked up on clothes and shoes for the summer. I know most of that comes from China. Luckily TP is domestically produced since we learned during covid that was what people really hoard.

I just hope some random HVAC, car thing, or appliance doesn't break during this nonsense.

So much uncertainty about the tariffs that this question cant really be answered at this time. Even trump has verry little idea how this is going to play out.
