OK - so we can set the record straight.

1) Penn State won national championships in both 1982 and 1986.

2) In 1982, Alabama beat Penn State, 42-21, in Legion Field.

3) In 1986, Penn State clobbered us, 23-3, in Tuscaloosa (BDS).

What's funny is the guy who brought up the 1987 game. Penn State was a HUGE favorite in that one. It was nationally televised on ABC in primetime on Saturday night - which was VERY RARE back in those days. Penn State was defending champ and Alabama was in its first real test of the Bill Curry era. To top it off, we had lost a truckload of starters including Mike Shula, Al Bell, Cornelius Bennett, Van Tiffin, and I don't remember who all else. We were rebuilding. And that game was in Happy Valley. Oh - and we beat them much harder than the 11 point difference on the scoreboard. Clay Whitehurst had a great game that night.

On that bad call...I've never seen the game. I lived in Germany and went to bed when we trailed, 34-7. I heard about it the next day and assumed the bad call was exaggerated.

About ten years ago I used to trade sports tapes with a guy on the Net - a Penn State fan. He had not seen that game in his collection, so he watched it. He even admitted to me it was the worst call he'd ever seen in his life - not even close - and we should have won it.

I have not seen that since 1983, and I will never forget how angry I was. I have never been angrier at a referee in my life than that day. If I remember correctly, Alabama trailed 34-7 going in to the 4th quarter. We scored 4 TD's in the 4th quarter (only 3 counted), and that began the downward spiral of our season. I remember going to the Tennessee game the following week. We lost that one, too.

I clicked on the link about some of the worst calls and watched the vid of colorado and mizzu...I dont think Johnson scored on fifth down...check the replays, looked like he was dropped a yard short.

I've heard about this play many times but this is the first time I've seen it (I was born in 1980). I'm simply shocked about the call, it was just plain terrible. It's a wonder instant replay has only been in use for about 5 years now. Imagine how many games would have been different. I'm quite certain we would have 2 more national titles (Namath scored against Texas and Miami fumbled...twice)

I remember that play. I was just a kid (about 10 yrs), but i loved watching the Alabama games. I was so devistated because I had really enjoyed the excitement of the comeback just to have it stolen away. My folks were so mad that my dad started swearing, and i had never heard him swear before. So it really sticks out in my mind. It just makes me sick to my stomach to watch it. I hope we beat the ever living crap out of them on Saturday. We shall see. RTR!!

I read that article and watched the videos as well. Can the 5th down play really be considered a blown call when no one in the stadium notices the mistake, the announcers didn't even notice?

SI did a small story on this. They had the field and endzone drawn up where in the back of the EZ it was cut out and was short in the area, then another game a Penn State player made a catch and was out of bounds but the REf ruled him in and that area was drawn real wide.
Here's the field configuration as shown in SI. Once the link opens, go to page 20.

I still get angry just thinking about that game. At the time I had a Betamax recorder that could do frame by frame. I watched it over and over. The call was so bad I still do not believe it was a mistake. I believe it would have been the greatest come back in Tide history. I really got angry when I found out who the referee was that made the call. I love when we beat Penn State.

The best drawing I ever saw came from a PSU alumni group. It showed an equal amount added and subtracted. They stated that with the subtraction, the integrity of the total square footage of the field was back in place.
Yes!!!!!!

and that no call in the LSU game in 04
