It is practically the only way to build depth and to keep guys in the program these days.
Does coaching and development matter? 100%

The difference in now and in the past is, not many guys will stick around when they have opportunities in other places. Especially when it can be very lucrative for a top prospect who is still viewed as a big time player, jumps in the portal. It is essentially free agency with no rules and zero salary cap. More kids mess themselves up than help themselves but it is hard to tell a 18-21 year old that.

Add to that, if you excel at one school (and this applies for more of the smaller market schools), you will get poached by a bigger program, ie Riley Leonard.

Again, coaching matters but it is also about getting the kids on campus and keeping them there.

Listening to Jimmy Steins going through his recruiting recap and about to release a piece on BOL about his top players in this class, he was absolutely gushing over Lotzeir Brooks saying he may actually be his crown jewel. He of course had great things to say about Russell saying he should arrive as polished as Tua and Bryce. Really exciting class! RTR!!

If he's that polished Ty or whoever is the starter next season may only hold it for one season before Russell takes over. We should be fine at QB moving forward.

Looks like taking three stars and coaching them up isn't a completely obsolete practice...

So many factors to players having 3 -stars..

Camps and being seen by recruiting analysts. not enough scouts in the area. so often the 3-stars are usually players who deserves 4 stars... or are very underrated players. So yes, Coaching/Development matters whether its' 3 stars or 4 stars.

Brooks was recorded this year at 22.1 mph which is the fastest recorded. He is a smaller slot type player who can stretch the field and be lethal in the screen game and quick game. I see us down the road having our bigger guys like Meadows out wide and moving Williams and Brooks inside. Size on the perimeter and blazing speed in the slot is a deadly combination.

If he’s truly a generational talent they may not hold him off for a full season unless they’re delivering big time themselves.
Going to have competition from Mack also. I think Ty will be the undoubted starter, Lonegan will transfer and Mack and Russell will get more seasoning and fight for the #2 spot next year.

This is fairly typical. I think Bama one year had all 5* and 4* except for one 3* and that was a FG kicker but we have always had several 3* in every class.
I was subtly getting a little jab in at the folks who said DeBoer was going to sign "a lot" of 3* players as if Saban and other colleges never had any.

Add Odom at 6' 5" in four wide looks and that is a scary WR line-up.
