What we are seeing is very similar to MLB in some ways. Things are going to divide into the haves and the have nots. It will all depend on the budget you have to go get “free agents”. It doesn’t mean a have not can’t put together a good roster for a season or two and make the playoffs or even win it all, but they can’t sustain it. Their rosters will be raided by the Yankee, dodger,Red Sox, type schools.

Football may be a little different than MLB in that you can run a system that can help compensate for talent disparity to some extent. You can get lesser talent to play smart and fundamentally sound or in a unique system and beat the more expensive and more athletic team. A really good coaching staff can scheme a win in some instances,

At the end of the day the system and entire sport is broken. They’ve completely wiped out my interest in the sport in general. I’ll always be a Bama fan and keep my toe in that world, but I’m not really a college football fan anymore. I just don’t care about it in any capacity like I used to. I was a start at noon watch until midnight guy. Flipping channels and at times having a game on the tv and another on my iPad next to me. That ended after 2020. Now I watch Bama only and that’s often on DVR. I didn’t watch an entire game except for bama all year. I would catch pieces of games only because my dad had them on the tv. My mom passed and he’s mov d in with us and he will watch the CFL if it’s on tv. 😂
If ESPN would bring back Australian Rules Football, I would be all over that!!! 😎

I believe it was reported Coleman originally took less from Auburn to sign than TAMU offered because it was “close to home and his relationship with the staff”. I think maybe we took a shot at Coleman hoping we might get the same type of “close to home/staff discount”, particularly with Derrick Nix from Auburn as our WR coach now. Evidently that wasn’t a factor for him this time.
My understanding is Alabama still actually came quite close on Coleman. He did choose the money, but and this is all just numbers people say, I read it was 500K less to go to Auburn, but then Alabama's offer was 1 million less.

If it wasn't a factor at all, and I can't really say, then Alabama never did come close. Either way it leads one to believe Alabama isn't dead broke right now, they at least acted like they thought they had a shot.

TIFWIW but Coach Saban is one of the most critical/negative human beings that has ever walked this Earth. If you made a tackle but used improper form, he wasn't happy. If you threw a touchdown but made the wrong read, he wasn't happy. If you were on staff and he heard you laughing in your office, he would chew you out (was directly told this by one of his former Defensive Coordinators). Some of you can live in the "sit back and trust this staff" world if you would like but as for me I need to start seeing results.
Another practice of Saban’s was that when things got tough, especially if the team or players were being criticized, he lightened up quite a bit and became an encourager, almost a cheerleader occasionally. It was when the team was on a roll and doing well that he would go off on someone if they didn’t do their job.

One ironic thing in all of this is I guess I was probably better prepared for this than most people because of how bad I thought it would be.

I did the whole, me against the world poster thing I tend to do now and then with NIL, trying the best I could to explain just how bad this would be. I said it was opening Pandora's Box, I said it was done in the worst possible way, I said it would just be used by boosters to buy players, I mentioned Phil Knight so many times I was mocked (I was told rich boosters would exercise caution and not overspend...).

And here we are. Now if you read what I'm saying you might not think I hate NIL at all, believe me I do. But the surest way out of this is if Alabama succeeds in the NIL era, the quickest way to change the rules in college football is Alabama domination.
I also stated that this whole NIL was the opening of Pandora's Box. I hate it, but there is no closing it now and the best thing we can do is put a CBA in place to at least get some structure and somewhat even the playing field...😎

There is enough money being made out there that I am almost certain that there will be lobbyists involved to keep a CBA from ever happening.

So, the main thing is that we have to adapt. We can survive and even thrive in this environment if we are smart about it with open minded thinking. IOU offers us some great insight into how to manage a roster in this era and that is something to take note of. Thing is, you have to weather the onslaught at the beginning, keep your head down and lean into the opposing force and keep your eyes peeled for the advantage. We have some smart folks in Tuscaloosa and in the fanbase. For that and many other reasons Alabama will always stay relevant.

I think one of the issues here is if you look where NIL originated, it was state law in California that the NCAA basically adopted verbatim. California's programs had fallen into irrelevancy at the time. So they had nothing to lose.

Now we're seeing the resurgence of programs like Miami (they always liked to pay their players), the arrival of new ones like Indiana, the people who wanted to shake things up are probably proud of themselves. If they look up and realize it's the same old programs gaining hold again they might realize they had their fun and it's time to try to find some sort of a solution.

As Breeze said I think there's a weather the storm element to this. The SEC is well positioned, Alabama while not top dog anymore still is relatively well positioned, but they do have to survive the onslaught and hopefully some common sense eventually prevails.

For now though, this is the way the game is played, just have to play it smarter...

100%...

Two scenarios that we are seeing play out right before our eyes as we speak:

A.) Sign a 5 star. Spend a million dollars to get him to sign. Spend money, time, and resources to develop him. Watch him grow as a young man at 18 and 19 years old. Watch him transfer when it is his time to be the guy to someone who has more money.

B.) Sign a 3 year starter from a mid-major or non-power D1 school. Comes in and plays immediately and helps team.

Option A sounds great if the overwhelming percentage of players aren't leaving before their eligibility is up but the truth is they are. Not only that, player evaluation is much easier to be right on when you can watch them play against college competition rather than trying to guess right based on high school film. When the coffers aren't loaded, ie Indiana, you can't afford to miss on too many high $$$ recruits, even if you get 105 swings.

Option A has been working for this staff. They have a great record for retention, though they are only 2 or 3 years in, according to how you want to count the first class, and have lost no one that i can think of that they wanted to keep. Recruiting and retention are the focus of this staff and they have performed exceptionally to this point. The final results won’t be known for 2 or 3 more years, but the returns are great to this point.

I see that TTU landed Malcom Simmons from the barn. When he entered the portal he had apparently posted a “Roll Tide” in his social media. Were we just not interested in him or not interested at whatever price he wanted? AFAIK he never even visited Tuscaloosa.

I remember someone had posted that he had a bit of a checkered past.

I hate raisins. Major hate. But I really used to love A1 steak sauce. One day I found out they used raisin paste. I stopped eating the steak sauce, cold turkey.

I sure feel like I just found out that football has raisin paste in it.

Cold turkey from A1 steak sauce......raisin paste must have made it super addictive. The withdrawals must have been otherworldly.

I saw something years ago that said that part of the way the stars work on recruits is it anticipates how soon they'll be ready to contribute.

That is how it was years ago, but 247Sports and I believe On3 does this now but they rate the players on NFL potential. For example their 5* players are the ones they feel will be 1st round draft picks. Playing early may still be part of the algorithm but not like it used to be. Forest Davis' system back in the day was totally based on the how soon they will start or contribute big time.

See example....Clemson. Sticking to recruiting over transfers.
The difference thus far has been that Alabama’s recruiting, evaluations and retention have been better, along with possibly development. You can mess up any approach even if the approach itself is fine. Alabama has done a great job thus far with that, though the final results won’t be in for a couple of more years.

The TT bag is probably the largest out there. They have a billionaire oil tycoon funding their program. When TT, Texas and A&M are involved we are most likely not going to be able to compete. We are doing it in a better fiscal way than just about anybody and I am cool with it based on the rules as of now and in the future.
