Question: A Passing Plan: What Do Coker/Kiffin Need To Do To Have Success Passing Against UF?

Their DBs are solid, but they play best in zone so you will have someone open on every play. The question is - will Coker have time to find the open man? He will only if you have success in the running game, so the answer really is, run the ball effectively.

Florida is going to be hard to beat if you can't run the ball against their basic alignment. You have to run the ball effectively enough that they have to bring in support and that their perimeter rush is slowed because of their respect for your running game.

Florida is going to try exactly what Alabama is going to try - to stop the running game in a standard alignment. I am almost positive that Alabama will have success defensively. Will Florida?
They didn't have much luck against LF.

To help passing game, good PA with a clean pocket. Assuming Florida sticks with what they've been doing on defense, short passes over the middle of the field will be open. They will want to make us drive the length of the field, hoping that we'll make a mistake along the line somewhere (sack, illegal procedure, etc.). I'm sure their coaches are preaching about limiting the big play, not letting Henry get loose, etc.

Their defense is very stout, but depth is a little lacking and their starters have some nagging injuries. Best thing for them is if their offense can consume time and keep them off the field. This has been a challenge for them since Grier was suspended.

I wish the two words were "play action."

However, Coker struggles with the type of throws that typically work with play action.

As someone else said, get him out of the pocket. His strength is throwing on the run and/or tucking and running.

That's true. We've seen a few bootlegs snuffed out and wiffed on the right side this season. Moving Coker definitely helps because it also changes the lanes and angles he can throw from which adds unaccounted for angles on the routes the DB's need to take in order to cover their receivers.

I'm going to say this.. I have a huge feeling Coker is going to wild out big time either this weekend or in playoff... I truly expect a bigger playbook for the playoff... Kiffin and Smart going out with a bang...

I agree that he has a problem with the longer passes that tend to be open when running play action, but a successful run game has another benefit - it slows the DEs and LBs. They can't pin their ears back and come after Coker if they are worried about Henry. Play action freezes them, giving Coker more time for any route to open up - not just the deep routes.

Henry has only 10 receptions all season. Mind boggling.
He may just have too many eyes on him at all times to slip down for that option. I think it would have worked better as an overall concept (aside from individual game plans for a particular opponent) earlier in the season, but now...as the leading Heisman candidate everyone will be looking at him constantly. Also rather have him blocking for Coker rather than Howard even.

Two plays I hope we don't see: the bubble screen and the jet sweep. Those plays don't work against any defense that has a pulse. As far as the passing game goes I would like to see some pass plays down the field. Not necessarily deep bombs but just some 15+ yard completions. It seems like a lot of the passing plays are within 5 yards of the LOS. Of course in order to throw down the field more there has to be pass protection and open receivers.

I'm with you. I get the point of them but I can't stand them. They will regularly yield around 5 yards or so....well, the bubble screens do, not typically the jet sweeps. The most capable of running those is Drake in any case. Ridley doesn't have the vision to see what he needs to from behind the LOS just yet and Stewart just gets bad luck and is met in the backfield 65% of the time. Since that counts as a pass, I'm on record as saying I think those will be a BAD idea this game. (Sits and waits to hopefully be proven wrong as a jet sweep net a touchdown.)

The jet sweeps yield touchdowns on plays where the D bites on a fake and vacates a gap in the middle and Henry makes a cut and starts stiffarming safeties down the sideline.

I hope someone ask Kiffin that when he leave....

I'll say this.. the jet sweep and bubble scrreen has worked to some degree in last two games...

Run to set up the pass. I would imagine we will see a lot of slants and crossing patterns, as well as some WR and HB screens. Roll Coker out on some PA.

Yup, if we never run it the fake is not effective. That said, just mauling them is more fun for me.
