JPWs performance yesterday reminded me of the guy standing with one foot in a bucket of ice and the other in a bucket of boiling water. On average it feels OK.

I've mentioned it in other threads. The problem began with Cardwell. It reveals something when he's our sixth best OL. He's a good kid - it's just an ability question. I remember when he was signed, JessN predicted disaster if he ever saw the field...
I am surprised that none of the 2006 OL started as underclassmen. I had high hopes that Ross was going to be a quality Center out of Homewood. Cardwell is just one recruiting class before this class and he was barely a two star recruit. He must have something that the four star recuits are lacking.

Remember that not all recruits (no matter the star rating) pan out. It is not out of the realm of possibility that most of those "highly touted" OL recruits of the 2006 class simply won't live up to their potential. It happens...

Tell me something I don't know :) You can still be surprised by the odds.

I thought I read a lot of praise about Cardwell earlier in the year. Am I thinking of someone else? Something along the lines of him maybe starting at center so Caldwell could slide over to one of the starting guard spots?

needs help. his surrounding cast is still young and average. his weakness is the deep ball pass. next year hoping for better run game and blocking. this will make him shine and take pressure off him having to make big plays every down.

A consistently successful QB cannot stare down his receivers 80% or more of the time and he must be able to feel pressure and step up, back, or around in the pocket to buy time. O-line notwithstanding these are two things that must be done and aren't. Once those are taken care of I will put blame on the O-line.

He lacks mental toughness. After ONE int. he was done tonight. The offense folded like a chair and we only could muster 3 pts in the entire second half. But qb isn't the only position that needs work. The OL is sub par as well. Almost every running play the back is having to dodge a defender that has penetrated the backfield.
Bingo. Totally agree.

I hope Coach Saban doesn't get bitten by the "Old Girlfriend" bug with Wilson next season......only remembering the good times. Because when the times were good, they were great, but those bad times were just awful :)
I think that's probably the least of our worries with Coach Saban at the helm

If I were grading , I'd give him a B+ . I think he could help himself more if he would run more QB draw plays; he is a pretty effective runner.
Also, for next year I think the first priority should be establish the run which never really happened this year. A strong run game will do wonders for the passing game.

jpw is a good qb, but, he is not a championship qb, which the tide needs to go the next level. his mechanics are bad, he has a different throwing motion for each type of pass. he is hopeless on the sideline patterns, deep or short. when he puts zip on the ball, he is effective most of the time. he still does not look off of the receiver. second half he did this all of the time. when the blocking is suspect he is quick to bail out, and throw a weak pass. he has no confidence when he is intercepted or a breakdown. he would perfect with a offensive line that was dominant. the question is do we have time to develop that perfect line. without the running game, the defense becomes more physical, and blitzes more, as they did last night. no, it is not all jpw fault, but, he is what he is and that is not going to change by next year. we need a qb with running ability to make plays outside of the pocket, to punish blitzes. obviously, coach is recruiting those kind of qbs now. the game has changed and the typical pro style pocket qb is history. the key is still the offensive line. we need the rush, and agile, quick qb.

I think the game plan was excellent last night with the short passes over the middle to the tight end and rb's sliding under. It allowed JPW to throw off his front foot with zip on the ball. I also think JPW would be a better player if we had some QB draws designed to run under blitzes. Something he could option off to at the line. This would take some of the heat off him and keep the defenses honest.

I'll be the first to say that JPW has his struggles, but a few posters have mentioned this: JPW's performance is not solely his responsibility. Saban has said it: our OL, RBs, and WRs have to do their part. Our OL definitely took a blow when Britt went out.

No one can play the same way when they MUST be on the lookout for defensive ends coming round the corners and a blitzing linebacker coming through a hole as when they feel confident that they are being protected.

Yeah, I see the throwing off the back foot and the staring down, but if Greg McElroy or Nick Fanuzzi were in JPWs place, the results likely would be even worse - and that's not a slam on them.

We criticized the heck out of Brodie looking scared back there, and he's the starter for the Chiefs, and the QB of the future there.

There's no doubt the OL needs it's share of improvement. The two most important aspects of an offense is a weakness right now for the Crimson Tide (QB & OL). Hopefully the offseason and another year under Saban's system will correct this.

I will say this. For the kind of offense it appears we're trying to run (pass first and pass often) it takes a qb that makes minimal mistakes more times than not. It would be different if our offense didn't require the qb to throw so much but the reality is our offense is headed to a more pass oriented type of offense which naturally puts the ball in the qb's hand more than ever.

So in knowing that who ever the qb is (not just picking on 14) they will be required to keep mistakes at a minimum. But if in 08 this doesn't improve we're going to be forced to run the ball more, eat up clock and play lights out defense.

I'm not reading anything new, or can I think of anything new anyone can say. Nevertheless, if we don't close it, this will run for days with stale posts. Therefore...
