I am surprised that none of the 2006 OL started as underclassmen. I had high hopes that Ross was going to be a quality Center out of Homewood. Cardwell is just one recruiting class before this class and he was barely a two star recruit. He must have something that the four star recuits are lacking.I've mentioned it in other threads. The problem began with Cardwell. It reveals something when he's our sixth best OL. He's a good kid - it's just an ability question. I remember when he was signed, JessN predicted disaster if he ever saw the field...

Tell me something I don't knowRemember that not all recruits (no matter the star rating) pan out. It is not out of the realm of possibility that most of those "highly touted" OL recruits of the 2006 class simply won't live up to their potential. It happens...
I thought I read a lot of praise about Cardwell earlier in the year. Am I thinking of someone else? Something along the lines of him maybe starting at center so Caldwell could slide over to one of the starting guard spots?I've mentioned it in other threads. The problem began with Cardwell. Bingo. Totally agree. He lacks mental toughness. After ONE int. he was done tonight. The offense folded like a chair and we only could muster 3 pts in the entire second half. But qb isn't the only position that needs work. The OL is sub par as well. Almost every running play the back is having to dodge a defender that has penetrated the backfield.
I think that's probably the least of our worries with Coach Saban at the helmI hope Coach Saban doesn't get bitten by the "Old Girlfriend" bug with Wilson next season......only remembering the good times. Because when the times were good, they were great, but those bad times were just awful![]()
cosignIf JPW had the defense Jay Barker had in his career, threads like this wouldn't exist.
There's no doubt the OL needs it's share of improvement. The two most important aspects of an offense is a weakness right now for the Crimson Tide (QB & OL). Hopefully the offseason and another year under Saban's system will correct this.I'll be the first to say that JPW has his struggles, but a few posters have mentioned this: JPW's performance is not solely his responsibility. Saban has said it: our OL, RBs, and WRs have to do their part. Our OL definitely took a blow when Britt went out.
No one can play the same way when they MUST be on the lookout for defensive ends coming round the corners and a blitzing linebacker coming through a hole as when they feel confident that they are being protected.
Yeah, I see the throwing off the back foot and the staring down, but if Greg McElroy or Nick Fanuzzi were in JPWs place, the results likely would be even worse - and that's not a slam on them.
We criticized the heck out of Brodie looking scared back there, and he's the starter for the Chiefs, and the QB of the future there.
I will say this. For the kind of offense it appears we're trying to run (pass first and pass often) it takes a qb that makes minimal mistakes more times than not. It would be different if our offense didn't require the qb to throw so much but the reality is our offense is headed to a more pass oriented type of offense which naturally puts the ball in the qb's hand more than ever.while working today i tried to think who jp reminds me of and it hit me;walter lewis. not from an athletic standpoint, walter was much more gifted in that dept.,but in his decision making. feast or famine, when he's on he's lights out, when he's off, ughhhh! i do think he'll be a winner as a senior, not wishful thinking, just a gut.
