Alabama QB competition article

I was one who had hoped for Jalen to go ahead and transfer. My reason is that I don't think he will play much, and if he goes before he graduates, we can keep him away from other SEC schools. If he graduates then transfers, he can go anywhere he wants. I am pretty certain Alabama can shut him down, but do we really want to have to do that for 2 years if he is playing for, say, A&M? We have at times struggled stopping mobile QB's, after all(but we have gotten better at that of late, or so it seems). I even sometimes think that fact is why Saban went with Jalen to start with.

If there is an agreement to stay, redshirt, graduate, and transfer, why would Jalen want to play in any game? He would be risking injury for no gain in his future. That's a big risk. I would think the agreement would be no play unless Tua was hurt and Mac proved unable to lead the team. Of course CNS would have to approve it.

I wonder if we see a similar situation in the Louisville game as we did in the USC game. Jalen "starts" but Tua plays the vast majority of the game until its wrapped up and Jalen comes back in.

Jalen is mobile, but he has not displayed the accuracy that the mobile quarterbacks who have given the defense trouble have in the games that we lost.

They don't even need to be fantastic passers, they just need to be able to quickly hit the free money opposing defenses concede in the hopes to keep the mobile QB contained. Johnny Manziel hit more than his fair share of deep passes and made some scrambles but what was just as killer was his ability to hit quick sticks to an interior receiver for 4-6 yard chunks. Those free money passes are what keep a defense on the field more and offers more opportunities for the athletic quarterback to break them in the big ways.

Hurts has simply not shown that ability in two years as a starter. Our 3rd down conversion percentage has been abysmal since that fantastic 2014 offense. Quarterback play has been the reason for that inconsistency too. Coker spent 3/4 of the regular season figuring out how to be a college quarterback. Hurts has spent two seasons on the same journey.

Ran into this video this morning on AJ McCarron highlights in the BCS vs Notre Dame. Just another data point on how a team with similar level of talent to the current team performs with a QB that can distribute the ball. This against an arguably talented defense.

I tend to forget how good AJ really was for us - but then I am old so I forget a lot of stuff [emoji6]

I was waiting for someone to post one about Hurts... Folks gonna cherry pick the article they like and ignore others.

Lol I didn't ignore or cherry pick anything. That article wasn't posted when I read the Tua one. Regardless the overwhelming viewpoint from fans/media seems to be that Tua should be the starter.

Note: I think that NFL QB thing is really the father's goal. It's a pipe dream. He has NFL talent at another position -- maybe RB, maybe TE/HB, and maybe outside LB -- but not QB.[/QUOTE]

I agree. Jalen is great at tucking the ball and running. He is also good at those short dump off passes. Where he falls short is the ability to see the field in passing situations. If that primary receiver is not open, he usually just runs the ball. But, the NFL does not have their QBs functioning as a running back; it is too dangerous. Jalen simply does not fit the mold of an NFL QB. If he does make the roster somewhere, he will always be a second or third stringer. With that said, Jalen is a great young man and I wish him the best. Tim Tebow is a good comparison. They both have similar talent and Tebow simply could not find success in the NFL.

Sure succeeded in knocking my Steelers out in 2011. :( Worst game I have ever seen in the NFL.

I started to doubt when he tries to compare Joe Namath, AJ and Jalen. But then when he says this:

Team Hurts isn't here to argue which player is a more talented passer. Tagovailoa might have the edge there based on, you know, one of the greatest throws in the history of college football. But one historic throw doesn't mean Tagovailoa is the best quarterback to lead Alabama into the 2018 regular season.

you understand he lost the coin flip and was grasping at straws to write reasons why Jalen should start over Tua.
