Alabama QB competition article

Maybe...............Tua is still the man............and I would let him play

As previously noted, I wish Saban would let the offensive coordinator run the offense. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Locksley's idea to bring in another qb when we were in a great rhythm in the first half.

I'm with you there............I don't know what is going on with the whole Tua/Jalen swapping, but if Tua is in the zone, leave him be and let him light up the scoreboard

Have to say I’m frustrated with QB situation. Don’t understand why a two year, starting QB needs reps.
To my mind Tua needs the the work with the offense, as competition is going to get more difficult. Can’t play worrying about what if Tua gets hurt. Belichick doesn’t play his back up preparing for Brady to get hurt. smh

I get this feeling (which I doubt is right) that Coach just keeps looking for a reason to start Jalen.

I'd say today's game answers part of that question. Hurts had a great game, and while it wasn't against the best competition, he still had to make the throws. This is a reminder what the struggles we've seen are not necessarily the best he can do. Also, he helps keep Tua healthy.

People often forget a few very pertinent facts.
A: Hurts it younger than Tua.
B: Hurts is the youngest starting QB Saban has had, probably the youngest starting QB in Alabama history (if not it would be a virtual tie). This negates some of the "two year starter" stuff.
C: Hurts never had a QB coach.

Some people look at it like, he's played, he's learn all there is to learn. That's an absurdity though. Tua is a wonder, but most quarterbacks take years to develop, and the truth is we simply don't know where Hurts is in his progress. He had a trial by fire, and music chairs with coordinators. Two year starter sounds well and good, but it could very well be redshirt freshman to.

So, to answer the question more succinctly, the reason to play him is because we might not have seen the best of what he can do yet. I can't think of what he's done to forfeit to the right to see the field. I mean Mac is the one that got the DUI, what did Hurts do wrong? He's only being inserted once the game is well in hand...

You totally ignored his point that Jalen, being a 2 year starter, probably doesn't need the reps to be a backup that Tua, a 2 game starter, needs to as the starter to prepare for upcoming games. It isn't just the quarterback, either, but the entire offense needs to work with the qb to get in synch and in a rhythm. Did you watch the Texas A&M game? We may have to play really well on offense to beat those guys. For that matter, though Ole Miss probably doesn't have the defense that A&M does, they'll probably score some points too, so we need to get in a good rhythm on offense, and rotating qbs may not be conducive to doing that against SEC teams.

Or maybe you are implying that you still think Jalen Hurts might be the better qb if he gets enough reps. Is that what you think?

Personally, I think this idea CNS has about splitting series with the QBs STINKS!

I thought Jalen had a great night, and took the team down the field for scores, but after his turn was over, the offense just didn't look the same. If he wants to play meaningful reps, then he needs to beat out his competition. If he can't, then he needs to sit on the bench until garbage time. The idea of the game is about putting the best players on the field, not salving people's egos.

you are not wrong, however I'd be all about letting tua play the whole first half in a blow out and letting jalen play the whole second half or most of it. I just fully think Tua would have thrown 5 or 6 TD's in the first half if he had just been allowed to play a whole half. I'm worried about having continuity when a team can score enough to hang with us, and that 100% will happen. Theres gonna be a couple games this year where bama is gonna have to score 40 to win IMO. The more reps for tua with the 1s the better IMO.

Looks like Saban is slowly working a way to name Jalen as starter again.

Negative. He's just trying to keep him engaged and sharp. Though I would argue that the timing of when to play him is weird.

Isn’t it also weird he said “Tua will start this game” but never said “Tua is the starter going forward”?

Not really. It's obvious that Tua is the starter now. It doesn't need to be expressly stated.

First, let's let this sink in a bit. Tua, who has looked incredibly polished, has a rating each game of 235 and 238, needs reps? C'mon, any jitters or what not he might have had are out the window. He's been getting first team reps in practice, he's the one who is playing when the game is still close, and he's also been inserted in some situations like at the end of half. That's not random, Saban wants Tua to get the meaningful snaps.

It's kind of like some people are just so unhappy Hurts is being allowed to see the field, that they forget Tua banging his head and looking shook up. Tua isn't built like Hurts, his being hurt already caused him to miss time in the spring. Which is really more important? Tua throwing for 5 TDs in a blowout, or Tua staying fresh and healthy? So, if nothing else Hurts is eating up some shots that Tua doesn't have to be exposed to. I don't know Saban's plan in terms of exactly how he intends to use Hurts, but as long as Alabama is scoring 50 points a game, it is hard to find fault with it.

As to the last part. First, I never questioned Tua's skill. The only thing I did question at all was how prepared he was, and I think that's answered. So ironically that's been switched around, now I'm the one saying look he's good to go, and other people are like wait Tua isn't ready yet, give him more reps! Tua is the man, he's the starter. That's that. Hurts is the one that, demonstrated by his regression late last season and struggles managing the situation in A-Day and against Louisville, needs some reps to work the kinks out. I find no reason to be upset that Hurts is allowed to play.

Wow, didn't expect to see Jalen play. So I guess the question still looms as to the plan for Jalen Hurts with respect to the new RS rule. If the RS route is the plan why in the world waste one of the games on Arkansas St? Stay tuned folks, this may have a twist that none of us were expecting...
