Alabama QB competition article

Nothing on his Twitter account about it.

He went down to recover a fumble and his left hand was hit by a defensive player in the process. He apparently shook it off and continued with the practice. I don't believe it is classified as being re-injured.

It's hard to resist instinct and quell adrenaline in the split-second. I'm sure after the fact it'd be perfectly obvious to him.

Yeah, I guess the natural instinct would be to go for the ball. That aside, all we keep hearing is its still a qb competition so perhaps he still has the perspective that he needs to perform well all around to be the starter.

And he is trying to win the job and the team. If he does not try to get the fumble back what are his teammates going to think?

Just as the black jersey means no contact from the defense Tua shouldn't initiate it by diving into a pile. Under these special circumstances, If I'm CNS and the ball is on the ground around Tua I tell my officials to blow the play dead.

I agree totally but I would bet the OL guys loved seeing him dive in and fight for the fumble. Definitely not the right time to do it but.....

I would have to find it. I really can't remember I'll look later today but I think one I read looked to see if big plays or a successful play impacts the likelihood of subsequent plays finding success. But I could be wrong.

And, doesn't the fact that its arbitrary kinda prove the point that its a myth or at least not a useful piece of information?

Success breeds Success.
One fan gets excited, then ten. Next thing you know the whole stadium has gone crazy.
Defense intercepts a pass and scores a TD. Momentum swings... When the Offense gets back on the field, some of that MO is still with them...
Ya can't measure excitement.

I'd be surprised if any of our QBs dove into a pile trying to gather a fumble in scrimmage - that's a recipe for injury, regardless of level of desire.

I was reading where Tommy Tuberville put his 2 cents in on who he thinks the starting QB should be and he went with Jalen. The problem with that is we run the risk of Tua transferring since Tua probably feels he's better. If that were to happen then what do we do if we have to play Georgia again? Kirby and his staff did a great job of shutting down Jalen. If we play them again what would our Plan B look like if Plan A doesn't work? I think Georgia is our biggest obstacle to making the playoffs over the next few years so it would seem we should go with the guy that gives us the best chance of beating Georgia. Sorry Tommy, I must disagree with you.

And that's why Tommy is in the broadcast booth and not on a major college sideline.

That's what the headline said but ole Tubs only said that right now Jalen has to be considered the starter, BUT he has to drastically improve passing if he wants to hang onto the job.

We all pretty much agree with that. With where spring practice is at right now, Jalen is probably still considered the starter, but we expect that to change. Tubs didn't say he thought Jalen would start the whole season, he just said "right now."

It was a click-bait title. Tubs said just about what everyone else is currently saying.

Well, I don't know. I think he was saying who he thinks should start against Louisville. I think if Bama fans were polled on that question they'd give a different answer.

I actually think the opposite maybe true. I honestly think at some point during last season Jalen lost the team and at that same point or shortly there after, Tua won the team. Granted, he didn't play until the second half of the last game of the season. But the second half of the title game, IMO, simply solidified what had already happened weeks before. And that's Tua won the team over as their leader and starting QB. I think if anything, Jalen is the one currently competing as the second string (from the players' standpoint), trying to win the job back.

Eh, maybe. He's still taking the first reps in drills when they aren't split. They are splitting time with the 1st team, but if we played a game tomorrow, I'd expect him to trot out onto the field.

Unfortunately I do believe the hand injury has delayed Tua's assent to winning the team in the spring and becoming the clear number one. We can all think of examples of QB injuries that led to them never regaining the number one spot.

I admit to being a concerned about how this will all turn out considering the QB transfers that have occurred over the last few years.

Fortunately, we do not have a game right now because that would be a HUGE disappointment IMO (ignoring Tua's injury).

Sure. Totally agree.

But that's what spring is for. It's supposed to be an ongoing competition, so as this point, I'm not offended that Jalen is still probably hanging onto his starting role. Things are changing, the battle is ongoing and if Tua does what we know he can do it will be a pretty easy decision.

CNS, for what it's worth, said himself recently that any injury on the team allows other players to gain more reps, particularly in a contested battle situation. But, he also said that that shouldn't be held against the injured player once he returns to the field and it's an open competition again. Tua will get his opportunity, but he will have be aware that he is still in the healing stage. Any re-injury will only lessen his chances of winning the job outright. I am not advocating for a Cam Newton-business decision (in the Super Bowl) move by Tua, but he has to be aware. Maybe Tua dives for the fumble mentioned above to show that he's putting everything on the line, but future fumbles he won't dive.

I'm a big Hurts supporter in that I think he did about as well as anyone could expect given the circumstances (teenager that still needed some development thrust into starting under three different offensive coordinators, all the pressure, etc...). I think he's still somewhat underappreciated by some, and that the whole Tua would have won every game as a true freshman if he'd just started from day 1 narrative is a bit of a stretch and somewhat disrespectful to Hurts. We know Tua developed as the season progressed, so we just don't know that the Tua that showed up against Georgia could have showed up earlier when needed. That's all speculative. The key thing though, is that Tua did get some time to develop on the sidelines, and what we saw in the Georgia game is a guy who seemed ready to step up and produce in big games (though it should be pointed out that Georgia probably didn't fully gameplan for Tua).

So, I like Hurts, I still think he could be a great college quarterback. He could be on a college campus for three more years, so we haven't seen the ending on that. Furthermore, it can't help Tua's hold on the job to lose the OC who if nothing else could call plays that played to some of Tua's strengths, and with that he has to adjust to another OC (like Hurts already had to do twice). In addition, the injury is about the worst possible timing, as it was a setback while he should have been entrenching himself as the Alabama starter.

Having said all that, if Tua is healthy for Alabama's first game, I would be absolutely astounded if Tua isn't the starter. The thing is Hurts can get better, he can improve, but Tua doesn't have the deficiencies in his game that Hurts has. He proved he can attack downfield. Hurts would need to take a leap forward, or Tua would need to take a step backward for this to be a real conversation in my opinion.
