Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

FWIW Interesting video on what makes Tua so effective throwing the football.

So much hype in one video.

That hand size and powerful trunk are crucial. Not to mention the clear intangibles or seemingly just "understanding" the game and what is going to happen next.

I do believe that there are bio mechanics experts out there who could perform a deeper dive into the throwing motion and others who could do the same with processor speed but this guy does a nice job covering the topics in a broad sense from a lay standpoint. One thing for sure watching Tua's HS throwing highlights draws one to conclude very quickly that there is something unique going on here. I watched a bit of Jake Fromm on QB 1 on Netflix last evening and truthfully Tua appears to be from a different planet altogether.

I took the time to watch it last night. Fascinating. I wonder who the narrator is who keeps refering to himself and his belief Tua is so special.

At any rate, his points seem legit. I especially like how he described his core thickness and how it helps him generate the quick, powerful release. I've studied the golf swing more than throwing mechanics, but most sports that involve hitting something or throwing something have core strength as a key element. Tua's footwork is beautiful but his core strength keeps him from having to wind up and transfer weight as much as others. A good point that was brought out.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

He ( Tua ) just appears to be such a complete weapon. Granted, he`s not even played a full game yet and I`m sure he`ll make some mistakes. Is he the runner that is Jalen? No, but he`s far more than adequate, to the point that his ability to tuck and run it has to be respected. In the championship game, his second most impactful play, IMHO, was made with his legs. As far as his ability to throw the football, to include the mental aspects ( reading the field ) and techniques ( evidenced by looking off the UGA safety ), at this point, how can there be any comparison?

JH was feared for one reason: his legs

Tua will become a more feared and effective runner because teams will have to respect his throwing and running ability. I know I'm going to tense up everytime he runs the ball for fear of injury, but I think his scrambling ability and knowledge of when to tuck and run will become a deadly trait of his game. I just hope Enos is teaching him how to slide!

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Every time I get to a point where I start tempering my excitement/expectations for Tua and this team this year something seems to come out to make me hyped again.

Sounds like Tua and the team as a whole had a good scrimmage. I can't wait until September 1st. I'm finding it harder and harder to believe CNS starts anyone but Tua the first game.

Also, for anybody interested John Doe has a new video out on youtube critiquing Jalen's play from this last season. If anybody remembers his last video you'll know what to expect. I an't link it here due to language.

It's long. Like, 52 minutes long.

Title is: Jalen Hurts Vs Tua Tagovailoa (Season 2) Game Over

I gotta reply to my own post cuz I'm still watching this dude's video and he's crackin me up. He's got so many great one-liners. If language doesn't offend you I recommend it. I think he short-changes Hurts a TAD more than he did in the last video but the criticism is still mostly valid and the tape just doesn't lie.

Watching it now, and it’s brutal. Who would have thought “JH” really stood for Jekyll/Hyde...

He definitely over states how easy some throws are but it really does show how JH missed some WIDE open TDs in almost every game. At times WRs dropped balls they shouldn't but mostly because they were bad throws and thrown reallllllly late.

The 2 biggest things that stood out to me (not finished yet only on A&M game) were how the OL and Daboll probably deserve more credit than they received last year.

Yah, I get what he is saying on some of the "I could make these throws and you could make these throws" type statements, but some of the throw on the run completions are WAYYY harder than they look.

But he still uncovers most of the dirty secrets by showing alternate angles of plays to reveal where and how receivers are open and how Jalen just flat misses them or doesn't give them the time to get that they need. The amount of times he rolled back and outside of a clean pocket was super frustrating.

Yea that is mostly what I was talking about. People seem to think throwing on the run is significantly easier than it is. Not everyone is Aaron Rodgers. But I agree that overall his point was completely valid.

Agreed. He seemed to be reading keys like a RB would. If you see jersey then cut and run. He would run towards pressure and make our OL look much worse than it was. I lost count of the number of times he could have just stepped up in the pocket and easily avoided the rush.

Wow! That was interesting. Also, I just had to go measure my hand size. 9 inches. Can't believe Fromm's is only 8 3/4 inches. Tua's
10 1/2 is big. What is Jalen Hurts' hand size?

This just makes me want to grab a football even after 7 or so decades.

Remember Javon Kearse, the Freak who played at Florida and then with the Titans? His hand size was 12 inches +. He could hold a 12 inch ruler between his thumb and pinky finger.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Maybe Jalen doesn't want to play in more than four games so he can retain his redshirt? I guess that depends on whether he goes or stays next year. Can't wait for the suspense to end.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I think the QB competition is over and Tua will be the starter. At least 99% of the fan base seems to feel that way. Coach Saban probably doesn't want to tip his hand yet because he wants Louisville to take time practicing for both QB's. The only remaining decision for Saban is how he wants to utilize Jalen and Mac in backup duties. I think Mac needs the snaps more than Jalen because Mac has much more potential to get better while Jalen seems to have hit a plateau. If I were coach I'd try to use Mac a lot in mop up duty and then still have Jalen available later in the season if disaster would strike and Tua gets injured. Then either one could play without losing Jalen's redshirt.
