Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I don't want this to sound as if I'm complaining about one of the best coaches ever, cause I'm beyond thrilled with his record. But, I am curious as to others' thoughts on why no change was made sooner.

Said this earlier in the thread, but it wasn't as clear during the middle of the season as it is right now. We've got this mounting pile of evidence as "proof" a change was needed, but during the season, despite his lack of passing aptitude, Jalen was still getting the job done.

Also remember the CNS's comments about Tua going 54 out of 58 in practice happened when Jalen was sick leading up to the Clemson game.

So hindsight, as they say, is always 20/20, but it's a harder call in "real time."

One question I'd like to ask CNS today is, knowing what you know now, would you have played Tua against Auburn? I think if Tua plays in that game we probably win it. I'm glad the season turned out like it did, but I felt like we were the superior team that day, despite out injuries and Jalen was the weak link.

If I were Saban and you asked me, I would clarify your question. You mean, knowing that Alabama would go on to win the national championship, would I have played Tua against Auburn?

Maybe Tua gets injured in that game or in the SECCG, or in the Clemson game. Maybe you DON'T win the national championship if you play Tua in that game, even if you beat Auburn.

Yup, beating AU means playing yet another really tough game (SECCG).

My goal every year is Bama winning the NC - everything else is secondary.

Heck, if we played Tua vs Auburn and won and then won the SECCG we might not have even played Clemson. We likely would have been 1 seed and played 4 seed Ohio State. Then played OU(assuming they beat Clemson which I think they would have) in the final.

Too many factors involved to worry about that scenario at this point IMO.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

It's just speculation that it could be him. Although if it is him I don't see why he wouldn't have a right to an opinion.

Agreed. Based on his commentary, he knows football at a high level especially the WR position and reading coverages.

I'm just talking about the Auburn game in a vacuum. Think we win with Tua.

I know it's hard to think about it that way, but I'm not suggesting I'd would have rather beat Auburn, even if that meant having to play Georgia in the SECCG, then OSU or the Sooners.

Again, I'm glad we got the NC and nothing else matters, but knowing what we know now about Tua's eliteness, I think it would have changed that game just like it did in the second half against Georgia.

[h=1]Why Part 2 of 'Training Days' was subtly about Alabama QB Jalen Hurts[/h]
My initial response is "no way the producers allow Bama to dictate the message."

Heck of a conundrum when the blue font inkwell dries up...

Let's see: All-access Alabama football, All-access Alabama football sponsored by the University of Alabama, All-access Alabama football commercials with on-message alums dovetailing UA academics and athletic championships - All-access Alabama football Executive produced and directed by...Nick Saban. I'd be surprised if Saban didn't have creative control down to revising the script for Kobe's panegyric on hitting the reset button every season to "edit yourself" and become better focused.

I don't think Saban would admit to thinking like that. But IMO, if he did, since they lost, he would say yes. But as you noted regarding the season as a whole, it's different during "real time". Remember at that point, that Jalen was 24-1 as a starter, and even in the only loss, he had taken his team down for the "winning score" and despite stats he had seemed to take a step forward vs LSU and though his overall game was only OK, he had still taken the team for 2 4th qtr scores vs MSU. So, in the last 2 SEC games he had performed fairly well overall or in the clutch. Vs AU Bama was ahead with 3 mins left in the 3rd qtr, so it's not like Bama was being blown out - they were actually winning. Though Jalen had not played well there was still the "clutch" aura that still existed around him. And after AU scored to go ahead, Bama moved on their next/last 3 possessions to the AU 12, 30, 30. When they got their, they imploded, but they did move. However, the AU loss removed the clutch aura that had protected Jalen. But IMO, with the way CNS runs his program, it would have been very difficult, almost impossible, to pull Jalen late vs AU. You had to give him the chance to pull it out again.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Here’s a crazy but probably known fact:

Jalen had 17 Passing TDs last year.

The back up Tua? 11 Passing TDs.

8 in garbage time, 3 in the Natty, imagine how many he would’ve had starting full time.

And the 24 passes Tua attempted in the 2nd half/OT was more than Jalen had in any single game.

If you were Saban you would have never answered a hypothetical question.

I'd love to know his answer as well, but there's no way in hades he answers a question like that straight up.

but I wonder how many times we had that many pass plays called, but a chunk of them turned into runs because jalen bailed out on the play?

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

yeah, but I hate to use averages for something like that. using that math with 72 scrambles turns into about 5 plays per game with a called pass where jalen ran. I'm sure in some of the really easy games it was way less than that because the receivers were more wide open, less pressure, and he played less anyway, while against some of the better defenses, he probably scrambled a good bit more than an average of 5.

Even with just 5, I'm sure that would put Jalen at 24 'attempts' in some of the games.

You asked for "how many times." I give you the best guesstimate of how many times.

Now, you want averages. Gilbert, what more do you want from me? ;)

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I could be way off base here, but I think Coach has his mind made up but he's just simply putting off the inevitable. We know how much he cares for these players and Jalen is a good kid thats done a lot for this team in the last two years. This type of thing is why CNS is paid big bucks but that doesn't make it any easier.
I fully trust Coach and I would be shocked if anyone but Tua starts against UL. We just need to be patient and let it play out! It's only 2 more weeks! RTR!

What really matters is that Saban knows what you have in Tua. Even if he chooses to mix in Jalen, he is not going to hesitate playing Tua ever again.
