Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I disagree...we'll average somewhere between 35-38 points/game like we have for the last half decade.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Paul Finebaum tweeted what Herbstreit said on his show: "If I see Tua trot out there for the first snap, I'll just say to everyone 'I'm sorry' because it's going to be a long year and they're going to score literally 45-50 every game."

I respect KH opinion about as much as anybody's in the college football media. He's been consistent in saying if CNS plays Tua that we are going to be scary good on offense for the first time in addition to having the crazy good defense we always have.

I think this is still true if JH takes the first snap. There may still be someone left somewhere who doesn’t think Tua will play a LOT more than JH (and be the starter sooner rather than later) ...living in a cave in the Himalayas, maybe.

I guess you think our talent level is the same on offense as it has been in years past but it is not. There is so much talent at every position and with Tua at QB we will average more pts than we have in the past. Easy to see the overall offensive talent is better this year than ever before.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Does anyone here think we will see Jalen first? Honestly I won’t be surprised if it happens. For the record I hope that’s not the case...but something in my gut says Jalen will start.

I don't think it is a talent level issue. It is Saban's tendency to call off the dogs when certain point differentials are attained in the second half.

If he didn’t then we would certainly put 40+ points up consistently.

It’s not that Coach is conservative IMO, he seizes the opportunity to get back ups in the game. It leads to a deeper team later in the year...and helps assuage personnel losses the following season.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I was amazed the other day when looking at our reception totals for the year last year. They are downright embarassing. When you factor in that some of the totals would have come from Tua.
Ridley 63 catches
Bo 17
Josh Jacobs 14
Robert Foster 14
Jeudy 14
Cam Sims 14
Irv Smith 14

When you figure that we played 14 games last year that means that we didn't have a receiver other than Ridley average more than one catch a game. It's shocking.

It’s even worse than that when you consider the next two on the list aren’t WRs, and the kind of passes I assume they caught.

Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Well-written despite two glaring errors:

(1) During this run, Alabama has had one QB win a major award: AJ’s Maxwell in 2013.

(2) Alabama’s lack of an elite college quarterback isn’t for lack of recruiting elite high school quarterbacks. Bateman, Barnett, Hurts, Tagovailoa: all were highly-rated coming out of high school. I seen to remember Jawon Pass was highly rated too, and although Alabama offered he’ll be playing for Louisville Saturday night. Jameis Winston was offered. I’m probably forgetting someone. The better story, one that would require real thinking to write (so, surprise, no journalist yet has), is why none of them (too early to say for sure with Tua) developed once at Alabama.

I concur, except there's an additional error that is the most egregious of all. Alabama doesn't have 16 NCs, as the author states. We have 17. :)

Didn't Bama present an offer to the Clemson QB, Watson?

ROLL TIDE!

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I believe he doesn't want to embarrass the other coach because he is friends with so many of them. Also they may not be willing to be an analyst after the get fired if he beats them too bad, LOL.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

The reason our ppg might go up with Tua is because we will score more points in the competitive games. Like vs Mississippi State, LSU, Auburn, Georgia type games. Not because Saban would run up the score more.

Well, AJ developed very nicely. I think that Saban just didn't want/need a gunslinger back then. With your o-line, RBs and defense, he just needed AJ to pass enough to keep the defense honest. But over the years Saban's offensive philosophy has changed (at least, it appears to have changed). He now seems to be willing to risk the ball more and he also seems willing to play quickly where before he wanted to use a lot of clock with every drive. Those things will allow a QB to get more attention and be viewed as more than a "game manager".

We also saw last year that he was willing to open it up to around 50 even against the lesser teams.

More third down conversions would equate to more points as well, especially if our kicker is reasonably accurate on kicks.
