Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I think what he's saying is that Saban has a history of calling off the dogs, whatever it takes - pulling starters, shutting down the playbook, etc...

I understand the calling off the dogs with Saban but I think it will be unavoidable with all the deep talent we have (our two's are going to be better than in the past). And like HTTR said and I agree that we will score more than 10 to 24 pts against some of the better defensive teams like we have in the past.

Time to beat the dead horse again but we should’ve beaten Clemson like 38-6 in the Sugar Bowl, our defense was so good that we should’ve scored almost at will on them offensively even with Clemson’s good defense.

Yep and the same thing in the FSU game.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

There was a know-it-all on another forum when D. Henry was a freshman and before the season started he insisted he would be moved to LB because he didn't have the speed to play RB. Biggest swing and miss in history.

once they hit about the 10 yard line both Arkansas DB's look like they just decided "whatever..."

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I do vaguely remember a few years ago when Saban seemed upset that we scored late in a game, when we were just running out the clock. I don't remember what team, or the score, or much more about it but that I was perplexed if he was mad at our guys, or the opponent's defensive players or coaches, or what was the deal.

Saban got mad when Eddie Lacy scored on a 60 yard run in the Capital One Bowl.

That's the one I most remember. You can see it here:

https://thewikihow.com/video_8VLG3eRm4hE

The play starts at the 2:01:15 point. Saban's reaction is at the 2:02:38 point.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Still the greatest fan-posts ever by those MSU fans. Reading their boards was truly hilarious, and not in a schadenfreude manner - those guys took that beating with great humor.

One of my favorites was the post where the guy claimed it was getting out of hand because one of our defensive linemen just jumped out of his TV and threw him behind his couch.

I compiled a list of them just after the game, gonna see if I can find it.

ETA, here are a few:

can we just take knees the rest of the game?" - During the first half.

"I think Bama's punter took his pads off."
--- Followed by: "He left them in Tuscaloosa"
--- Later followed by: "I think their punter is currently drinking around the world in Epcot."

"Do you think this is how Custer felt?"

"If we played 10 times, they would win 15"

"why are they allowing Alabama to play with 35 players on defense?"

"I want to know how many times in the history of organized football that teams have punted on 4th and goal"

"Their 4th string running back just ran through our entire defense and all we could do was swing our purses at him."

"if i’m Maxwell, I fake an injury on the way to the huddle" -- Posted as Maxwell, one of their backup QBs, was entering the game to replace an injured player. Maxwell was knocked out of the game three plays later.

"We’re going to have a wing named after us at Orlando Regional Medical Center by the time this game finishes."

"backups? they just put in some of the cheerleaders and not the male ones either."

Sounds like a guy that post on TiderInsider, Joe Lon Mackey, that was adamant that Henry would never make it at running back but would move to running back. "know it all" suits him, too. The guy is never wrong, but there are a lot of that kind over on TI Quad forum.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I don't necessarilly agree with this. One of my rare complaints about Coach Saban is that he oftentimes leaves the starters in for too long. We clearly shut down our offensive gameplan but we don't take the starters out at that point, either on offense or defense. You can take Jennings injury last year against Clemson as an example of starters probably being in a little too long. For the most part it's never really bitten us with an injury off the top of my head other than that.

Last year was the first time I can really remember where it seemed like the backup offense actually was running real plays later on in the game. Obviously, it paid huge dividends at the end of the year. Traditionally, by the time he puts the backups in on offense it's just a straight hand off game and I question how much experience the backups get from that experience. I've always desired them to actually call plays like it's a normal game and not a blowout.

I've always thought it was somewhat contradictory that Coach Saban asks the players and fans to play a full game, not look at the scoreboard, etc but the coaching staff clearly doesn't call a game with that mentality.

Having said that, I love the guy and this is just a minor nitpicking point. I think most of the development of our players occurs in practice by constantly going against great players and being worried about losing your job to the next up and comer. Last year was a welcome change as far as the use of the backups and I hope it continues into this year.

You're not wrong. But I'll admit I was mostly thinking of the defense when I made my comment. All the times against lesser teams that we had a shutout and the 2nd and 3rd team D would be in the game and start giving up yards and a score or two. It sucked to give up the shutout, but CNS was using those times as teaching moments for those young D players. You're right, this did not always happen on offense. But, straight hand off plays do benefit the Oline and RBs greatly, IMO.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

This of course is just my opinion but I think we will Score 50+ppg all year.

We just have so much talent and scoring ability.....more than ever before honestly especially when you consider the depth.

Something was different last year late in blowout games where CNS let Tua fling it around to the FR WR's and Najee, Jacobs, and BRob were breaking of some nice runs too.

We weren't trying to run the score up but we kept operating the offense and not just dive plays trying to run the clock out.

There was one game (Vandy I think) where Bo was pleading with CNS to get Ronnie Clark a late TD and they were all laughing as we took a couple knees at the goaline.

Anyway circling back to my view for this year.... I see Tua starting and playing into mid-to late 3rd quarters and just ringing up points right and left. Relatively competitive games will see him playing into the 4th.....he'll throw 4,5,6 TD's in near full games.

I mean he LIT UP an UGA Defense in basically a half of football. C'mon now we're going to SCORE a LOT this year.

Damien is going to run WILD behind the OL (that btw is probably going to rival the 2012 line).....Them are some nasty fellas... just straight Beast Mode Road Graters. Holes are going to be blown open and Damien and Najee will fire through the LOS like being shot out of cannon for huge chucks of yardage.

Take them out? Ok....LOL....here comes Jacobs and BRob.

Later on either Jalen will come in and add an additional Running threat OR Mac Jones will come in and be allowed to fling it around to Waddle and other young WR's much like Tua was allowed last year.

We are going to just absolutely light up the scoreboard. CNS would literally have to go 100% 3rd String everywhere and run vanilla dives to shut things down..... if even that would work.

Leatherwood said a Storm is brewing..... He's right....and starting this Saturday it's going to be a Hawaiian Tsunami of Biblical proportions sweeping all throughout the SouthEast.

I'm ready.... ya'll ready??

This is my favorite that I repeated to friends and family. This was the post after Eddie broke that 60 yd run that was referenced earlier. Amazing when Eddie is your 4th team RB.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Comments from Kirk Herbstreit:

"It sets up on paper for Tua Tagovailoa to be the guy and Alabama to score at will," Herbstreit said. "They will win every game and nobody will have a chance to beat them. If they find a distributor, this is the best offense Nick Saban has had."

"In the past it was defense, special teams, field position and Jalen Hurts running around and trying not to make mistakes," Herbstreit said. "If I see Tua (Tagovailoa) trot out there for the first snap, I'll just say to everyone I'm sorry. Because it's going to be a long year, and they're going to score literally 45-50 every game."

Every analysts (including Herbie) who has had practice access during the off season have all come back and said the same thing on air, and that is they would be surprise or "shocked" if Tua wasn't the starter. I know Galloway and Herbie have had access to practices and obviously on the field views of the A-Day game. I know Greg McElroy has had access as well. I heard him say last night that he would be surprised if Tua wasn't the starter. I think all the "I haven't made a decision yet" and the "The competition is still going on" is simply coach speak from CNS. Especially in the week leading up to the opening game. Like McElroy and Herbie said this week. The players and the coaches already know who's starting Saturday. The only ones who haven't been given this information are those outside the program.

Seriously, I'm that optimistic too. I've said a few times I think we might average over 500 yards a game..

We'll be in the stands on Saturday and we have determined that we will cheer loudly for whoever gets the start.

Rat poison.

DCs will figure Tua out to a degree, if they haven’t already. Not to say he won’t be great, but no one scores at will by the time they get into the meat of the schedule.

Our secondary will be tested early and often, and the injury bug already has not been kind to us.

Not intending to be an eeyore; but I don’t think any team that has been thoroughly anointed by the chattering class before the first game has ever won out. There’s a reason they’re in the media and not on the sidelines...

Don't think it's just about Tua, but about combining high level qb play with our receivers and running game.

Most teams are not going to be able to play us straight up so they'll have to pick which one they want to try to stop. Load up to stop the run and we'll kill 'em passing. Drop back to stop the pass and we'll run it down their throats.

This is what adding Tua that will literally change what we've been able to do since the 2012 offense that could largely do the same.
