Re: Associated Press: Gil Brandt says Newton will go in first half of NFL draft

I contend that Bama lost the game because of a few things we DIDN'T DO as opposed to what $cam did. 2 busted coverages for TD's for the barn, 1 dropped TD pass for us. If we had done what we needed to on ANY of those 3 plays, it could have been an entirely different ball game. $cam really didn't do anything spectactular in the game, we just shot ourselves in the foot over and over. Coulda, shoulda, woulda.

Anyway, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if a team took $cam in the first half of the first round. Actually, I'd be more surprised if he WASN'T taken by then...
No question he's a tremendous athlete and will be chosen in the first round.

My questions are about his arm and his ability to read defenses. A lot of his "great throws" came to wide open receivers as a result of all the misdirection and being absolutely fooled. True, he still had to make the throws, which he did, and he may make them in the NFL as well. I will have to see him consistently make throws into the much tighter windows he will be facing in the NFL before I am sold.

Also, I doubt he is going to ge the benefit of the meerkat offense in the NFL. As with every other QB coming to the NFL, it remains to be seen whether he can read defenses at that level.

FWIW, I've never bought into the Andrew Luck hype.

I never understood why he was a finalist and Mallett wasn't.

QB A: 3592 Yards 66.5% Completion 30 TD's 11 INT's 170.53 QB Rating
QB B: 3051 Yards 70.2% Completion 28 TD's 8 INT's 166.10 QB Rating

A is Mallet & B is Luck I'm not saying Mallett should have won the Heisman, but he should have been invited, and I do think a lot of Andrew Luck is just hype. He's good, no doubt, but I haven't seen him do anything other QB's can't do. Him being #1 on that list means nothing to me.

Cam's a top 32 talent.

Don't know where JJ is. His injury history could be one reason. The NFL looks at that stuff closely. NFL drafts on needs also. But, in the passing game NFL, wide receivers are important. Ask Peyton Manning this year as he has lost most of his.

That is the only list I have seen that doesn't show JJ somewhere in the first round. He is not only a WR, but he is a great blocker, which helps his status. Also, doesn't seem to be a mock draft. That looks like a list of the Top 32 players. He should be in there, and so should Cam.

Re: Associated Press: Gil Brandt says Newton will go in first half of NFL draft

It will be interesting to see how he fares in the NFL. He may be great, but he may not be so great. I figure if he goes to a crappy team, he will probably be the starter next year (if he can learn the playbook and read defenses better). I just cannot wait until he is gone from the SEC.
Bingo! His coach has been reading defenses for him, so we will see how he fares when he has to read them by himself.

Re: Associated Press: Gil Brandt says Newton will go in first half of NFL draft

The problem with $cam is that he doesn't really fit into an NFL system. So good luck having a team commit near $100 million to him, to find out if hes a fit. For that kind of money you need someone who is a refined passer and has an ability to identify and read defenses. Can you imagine Cam trying to decipher the Steelers or the Ravens defense right now? Cam run right, Cam run middle, Cam run left, doesn't cut it in the NFL. Now he will dominate broken plays because of his talent, but once NFL coordinators key in to his running, he'll get killed.

I also believe someone mentioned the lack of film on him, this may be the biggest determining factor in his draft status. I've seen him only make a few throws this year that were outstanding. The two longballs he threw against us were both completed because of a blown coverage, and Mark Barron overrunning an underthrown ball that should have been intercepted. I've really only seen him make a few pure throws where only his players could be the ones to catch it, he has great talent, but right now he doesn't have all the throws, he has a decent motion and a strong arm, but so do a lot of guys who can't cut it. You need accuracy in the NFL and he's only been okay with that this year.

If I'm making the call, I'm not committing a first round pick and first round money, to a question mark of NFL ability, a question mark of NFL football intelligence and a question mark of character. Too much baggage for that kind of money. I'm not saying he won't get picked in the first round, heck teams like Detroit are always terrible because of decisions like this, but most of the better teams will probably pass on him. Of course this is all my opinion, but it's rare that someone coming into the league as raw as he will be, playing a position in a style that has been largely unsuccessful, goes in the first round. Also I mean success by championships, 44 Superbowls played, how many have been won with a running quarterback? None.

Top 32 talent, absolutely. But he just doesn't fit the systems in the next level.

If Gus goes to Vandy before the championship game, we might get to see a little of this on Jan. 10!!!

Re: Associated Press: Gil Brandt says Newton will go in first half of NFL draft

You have to be impressed with how elusive Newton was while running the ball this year, but a lot of the credit has to go to his OLine. Aside from the Bama game, the holes up the middle for him to run through were huge. He was at the second level before he was touched on the majority of his runs. Yes, he was bigger and faster than most of the defenders who were trying to bring him down, but I never really saw him do what Tebow did and run through traffic to get a tough 3 yards - he's a different kind of player.

The NFL will be a different story for Newton, and hopefully a rude awakening. The talent on NFL teams if obviously a huge step up from the college level, and there is no way he has an OLine in the NFL that can do what his OLine did at Auburn - not on a consistent basis anyway. Is he as quick trying to escape a blitz from NFL players? We'll see. It takes him so long to get up to speed when compared to Vick, I just don't see that there's any comparison. He has shown a strong arm with good enough accuracy to play and win in college, but whether or not that will translate to success in the NFL is open for debate.

Personally, I think his running ability is overrated, and without being a legitimate threat to run his arm will need to improve to be successful.

That being said, I can easily see a team taking a chance on him in the 1st round, assuming he doesn't blow it at the combine.
Interesting that he loved to display his size and power by running over much smaller db's, but when Dareus and Upshaw (I believe) had him in their crosshairs he fell on the ground. Tebow wouldn't have done that.
It's easy to be big and bad to those much smaller physically than you are, it's another thing to take on all comers. He has no guts.
