Auburn Until A Few Years Ago:
National championships will never exist in football until the day we have a playoff. Until then, it's all just talk.

Auburn Until Yesterday:
We've won five national titles, more than most teams.

Auburn This Morning:
We've Won NINE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (during a time we said they didn't exist).
Before today even happened, I’ve - in snide - claimed that I only personally recognize playoff national champions. I’ll say it’s tough to go from 18 down to 3, but worth it to officially render Auburn’s, UT’s, ND’s, etc. make believe and totally illegitimate. They don’t like the second part.

Claiming national titles more than a century after the fact boils down to one thing: commitment to the bit. At first you're going to be treated as a high schooler who showed up to school on Monday with a fresh, bleach-blonde mohawk. Of course people are going to point and laugh. If you give in, the other kids will never let you down. But if you proudly claim your new identity, by Thursday you're simply the kid with the bleach-blonde mohawk.
That analogy is so red-neck-barnish it's perfect!!!

But, the problem with this is after the dust settles (on Thursday), you are still "simply the kid with the bleach-blond mohawk" that everyone laughs at when you walk by.

Yes, Auburn, everyone will still be laughing after Thursday!

The LSU people over here are already jumping on Auburn calling them a bunch of goobers because they are now claiming a championship for 1958 which LSU won. LSU was 11-0 that year, and beat Clemson in the Sugar Bowl. LSU was awarded the AP National Championship. The Barn was 9-0-1, but they were 6-0 in the SEC. They did not play LSU, but versus their only like opponent - Kentucky - LSU won 32-7, and the Barn won 8-0. The Barn was awarded the Montgomery Full Season Championship in 1958. Was that something given out by the Alabama governor that year? Moves like this are what make Auburn who they are.

The now defunct College Football Data Warehouse website had a great write up on title selectors from 1869 to the current year with listings of putative title winners. They had a strict title selection where they boiled it down to as few as possible and then one listing of every selector.

For the strict list, we'd lose 1941 of course. But on the total list we had like 37 years with a natty of some type. And I'm pretty sure that didn't count 2020 and maybe 2017.

So... we got 38 lil bro dudes!

Let's just add
1945
1966
1977
And be done with it!
We could and should with more legitimacy than what Auburn is doing here. It would look awfully petty, given the timing, but in a time when the NCAA is powerless as ever and everyone is writing their own history, it’s more of an internal decision than anything any external factor could prevent. We’d be ridiculed, but would we care. Special note: If we did, we should officially take ‘41 off.

This is as succinct as statement as I can come up with for Auburn today.

“Auburn began the day woefully less successful than Alabama in football, and sold their self-perceived sanctity in order to elevate themselves to being considerably less successful than Alabama in football.”
