Btw - doesn't this mean all of their articles scrutinizing OUR national championships are headed to the computer trash bin?
Before today even happened, I’ve - in snide - claimed that I only personally recognize playoff national champions. I’ll say it’s tough to go from 18 down to 3, but worth it to officially render Auburn’s, UT’s, ND’s, etc. make believe and totally illegitimate. They don’t like the second part.Auburn Until A Few Years Ago:
National championships will never exist in football until the day we have a playoff. Until then, it's all just talk.
Auburn Until Yesterday:
We've won five national titles, more than most teams.
Auburn This Morning:
We've Won NINE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (during a time we said they didn't exist).
That analogy is so red-neck-barnish it's perfect!!!Claiming national titles more than a century after the fact boils down to one thing: commitment to the bit. At first you're going to be treated as a high schooler who showed up to school on Monday with a fresh, bleach-blonde mohawk. Of course people are going to point and laugh. If you give in, the other kids will never let you down. But if you proudly claim your new identity, by Thursday you're simply the kid with the bleach-blonde mohawk.
We could and should with more legitimacy than what Auburn is doing here. It would look awfully petty, given the timing, but in a time when the NCAA is powerless as ever and everyone is writing their own history, it’s more of an internal decision than anything any external factor could prevent. We’d be ridiculed, but would we care. Special note: If we did, we should officially take ‘41 off.Let's just add
