I don't think politics had much to do with the decisions, other than in relation to the politics of potential bad outcomes related to student/coach/staff health.
The power brokers in college football are all members of the old green party, not the new one related to environmental issues. Money is a powerful driver and I'm quite sure that in their mind there was an even more powerful driver or else they'd be playing this fall. Whether fear of lawsuits or to their reputation or actual concern for the aforementioned parties, they decided over money concerns to shut it down. (yes, I'm a cynic as well for those doubting that genuine concern for health prompted this decision)
