Bad News For People Who Hate Good News (economy added 243,000 jobs in January)

Also consider the cost to mine the elements used in the batteries,and the scarcity of many of those elements. This is not an answer to our problem - not even close. It is simply something that we are doing to make ourselves feel better.

Sadly, that describes a lot of the "social engineering" solutions, whether it be the environment, welfare, health care, education, etc.

I hate to lump all that in together, but in as much as most of those changes have been made for political reasons rather than with a solid plan to meet the long term needs that they are meant to address, I agree.
 
The economy added 115,000 jobs last month (only 85,000 jobs less than what's needed to keep up with increases in the labor market), and Obama seems quite pleased with the progress. I'm surprised the progress hasn't been trumpeted on this board. I'm curious what all the enthusiasts think.

I believe the trend for the last 3 months has been down which obviously isn't good. I did not hear where Obama was pleased with todays numbers.

Obviously if the rest of the Summer continues like this, Obama is in real trouble (as are we).

That being said, I think you'd be surprised who's defending this jobs report.

NATIONAL REVIEW: April Jobs Report Not as Bad as You Think

The headline payroll numbers fell short of consensus expectations in April, rising 115,000 overall and 130,000 for the private sector. However, the Labor Department once again made large upward revisions to prior months. Including these revisions, nonfarm payrolls were up 168,000 and private payrolls were up 196,000, both beating consensus expectations.

Some analysts ignore these revisions, but we think that’s a big mistake. Normal monthly revisions to the original payroll report have now been positive for ten straight months and have averaged about 40,000 per month during this period. As a result, without revisions, analysts have a systematically and downwardly biased impression about the job market.

Meanwhile, some analysts may discount the drop in the unemployment rate to 8.1 percent, given that the drop was due to a decline in the labor force. However, in the past year, the unemployment rate has dropped 0.9 percentage points (from 9 percent in April 2011), while the labor force has grown 700,000. In other words, the trend of decline in the jobless rate in the past year is not due to fewer people looking for work.

Another piece of good news in today’s report is that the median duration of unemployment dropped to 19.4 weeks, the lowest level since 2009. Total hours worked increased 0.1 percent in April, and are up 2.1 percent from a year ago. Although cash wages were unchanged in April, they are up 1.8 percent in the past year. Combining hours and wages, total cash wages are up 4 percent from a year ago, which is still outpacing inflation.

And once again the regime played magic ponies with the numbers by dropping another 200k jobs off the overall number. Each time they do this the number they use will continue to drop. What does it mean? It means the reelection team thinks that there are more stupid voters than less stupid voters.
 
But you see, you need some perspective. Right after the Annoying One was elected one of his shills was on CNN talking
about the unemployment rate when this mind-boggling reply came out:

"Well, even with an unemployment rate of 8% that still means that 92% of people ARE employed."

Gee, using that standard I can't help but wonder what his problem with Bush was on the economy. So I guess
during the Great Depression of the 1930s, we could have said:

"Sure, the unemployment rate is 17% but that means 83% of the people ARE employed."

I should also add that electric generation tends to be more efficient than the internal combustion engine.

On average, coal fired plants run about the same efficiency as an internal combustion engine (around 30%). 54% of our electricity comes from coal fired plants.

Well, you see, there is this little thing that people in the real world have to actually deal with and it is called the Laws of Physics.
 
Electric cars themselves, at this point, are not "green," as the energy produced is currently created through the combustion of coal, natural gas, or oil just like powering your laptop or TV. However, once the "grid" is equipped with cleaner sources of energy, it will allow for cars to be powered using these same environmentally friendly methods.

Well, if you would like to be prepared personally, buy an electric car. Pay the full price out of YOUR pocket not mine ala federal tax incentive. Since I personally don't want to prepare for an eventuality that could have a better outcome I don't want to subsidize anyone else's.

If you want the "leave me alone" approach we can do that, just make sure to be consistent with all other things.... i.e. abortion, gay marriage, etc....
