If you look at that play, the OL was back where the RB was waiting on the ball...ready to escort him down the field. I believe this was a designated play all the way...Didn't he fling it over his head in a miraculous attempt to continue the play? Only to have an AA RB grab it on a bounce and go like 27 yards on a fourth and 26? That IS well thought out!!!
We will have a FAR better pass rush in 2018 than this past year. A lot of our issues came from injuries. I think if they can stay healthy it will help the DBs to “get in their feet”. That said, the safeties are set and the CBs have played meaningful minutes. I don’t think it will be as big a drop off as some are predicting. In a word...YES! While the defense will be stronger than most in D1 I doubt that it will be as good as the last few years. Just start with having to break in new DB's. IF the OL comes along as we think and the QB's continue to develop (TT primarily) our passing attack, we could see a Saban era record setting offense. I am pumped that CNS has brought in a specific QB coach.
A couple of years ago when Tim Williams was giving quarterbacks nightmares our secondary looked alot better than it actually was due to the front four not giving any QB time to pass on them. I could see that happening this year while our secondary gets better after the first few games. I really do not see anyone that can beat Bama in it's first 8 games. That is alot of time for the secondary to gain experience. We will have a FAR better pass rush in 2018 than this past year. A lot of our issues came from injuries. I hope you are correct...and we may wind up there. Like another said, we will miss Payne in the middle to be sure.We will have a FAR better pass rush in 2018 than this past year. Could, but I think Mathis is going to surprise some peopleMy reckon has been that Davis would be the NT this year...but I dunno.
He basically solidified himself being drafted in the first round. I think if he hadn't of "broken out" in those last three games, he would have been a late first round at best and very possibly an early second round pick. But currently he's being projected to go anywhere between 15th-19th in a few mock drafts I've seen. I don't think he's projected that high without the last three game performance.Davis is really tall even for a lineman...that can be a hindrance for a nose tackle typically. You're probably right that Mathis just got a year of seasoning due to Payne's excellence.
By the way, I really thought Payne took his game to the next level in our last three games. I think he had a sack in each...was incredibly disruptive. He was likely gone no matter what but he solidified his payday a great deal.
Mack Wilson is going to be a first round pick. He's the next great one. Dylan Moses is going to prove to be that good, too. It's ashame that he got injured in bowl practice because he was already becoming a star.Payne, SDH, and Rashaan will be missed. They are some of the best to come through Bama.
But man, we are going to be really deep across the front seven. A plethora of size, speed, and talent. I think we see some high sack numbers.
Payne was one of the bright spots of an otherwise forgettable Iron Bowl. He basically continued that war path into the playoffs but all the guys around him followed along with him this time (mostly due to them being healthy). Payne was already vying to be the best at his nose tackle position at Alabama under Saban but his coda to his career here actually put him into the company of the best DL we've had here period. When it was do or die, he was unblockable. He completely changed the game in a normally thankless nose tackle role.He basically solidified himself being drafted in the first round. And that's why I'm not overly concerned about the secondary. Everyone remember how the 2015 front seven helped the secondary by putting so much pressure on the QB? I suspect similar play in 2018.Payne, SDH, and Rashaan will be missed. They are some of the best to come through Bama.

Payne reminds me of Warren Sapp. He's a beast and should have a great NFL career barring injury.Payne was one of the bright spots of an otherwise forgettable Iron Bowl. Whoever gets Payne is going to have some good slogans and game day signs in their stadium..."it's time to bring the Payne" or "house of Payne"Payne reminds me of Warren Sapp. He's a beast and should have a great NFL career barring injury.
