What you're talking about - the pole vault from #5 to #1 - only happened twice (1977 and 1983) and the fact the SWC doesn't exist any longer prevents that.

We are currently #8.

Ohio State-Michigan will eliminate one of those two, now we're 7.
Beating UGA would guarantee us AT LEAST 6 - and probably higher.

The real hangup for us is what happens if Oregon beats Washington on the last play by 3 points.
And Texas.

But Pitt REALLY DID beat WVA and UCLA REALLY DID beat USC in the BCS days.
And Sparty KO'ed Ohio State in 2013.

So...we still have hope.

You're right, it did not happen often in the old days. But I would even refer to 1965 when Alabama was fairly out of things with an 8-1-1 record going to play Nebraska in I think the Sugar Bowl (maybe the Orange). Chaos happened elsewhere in the bowls and Alabama was the last team standing at 9-1-1 after an impressive win over the Cornhuskers.

It's just the fact that your hope extended all the way to New Year's Day. But yes we're not dead yet this year. Not by a long shot.

I'm not gonna lie, I wish there was a way January 1 still meant a lot AND we could get the two best teams to face off for a championship. Most years at least 2-3 games - occasionally more - played into the final vote.

If the coaching staff - one particular guy - would have admitted he was wrong and that Pete Golding knew less about coaching defense than the winner of a Fantasy Football league and Bill O'Brien's offense was more predictable than the Texas summer weather (it's either scorching hot or raining hot, one or the other), we might have won the championship last year.

In both cases, he may have waited too late.
We know he did on the first one.

I pretty strongly disagree. Milroe would have ate vs USF. You're right he hadn't figured it out yet but I think we would have won by a good bit more with him

Jalen was still lacking confidence in any aspect of his game when we played USF. He wasn’t reading defenses. He bailed to the right every time the pocket collapsed and the O-line issues contributed greatly to that. He didn’t know what throwing the ball away meant. He was a lost soul until he was benched. Fortunately he had the right attitude and mentality to lock in and learn from the experience. Now the O-line has progressed nicely along the way and the offense is designed and schemed to his strengths. Jalen is not what he was then.
