If I had to guess, I'd say someone is still smarting after the Citrus Bowl game played after the 1994 season. Jay Barker to Sherman Williams game winning TD pass ring a bell?

Re: Alabama's BCS Football Trophy Shattered

I'm going to address the Prothro and LSUFreek thing and then hopefully we can get back to jokes about how soon Alabama will get another trophy.

First off, one has to address Prothro as a person. He never got in trouble, he was humble, he played for Alabama during a tough time and was the bright spot. As a player, he was on his way to a big season. He had 691 total yards through 4.75 games basically. If you prorate that out, he would have had 1,746 total yards. That would have put him in the top 20 in all purpose yards, second in the SEC (well ahead of McFadden at three). This for an Alabama team was was 67th in total yards (7th in the SEC). If you want another example of his impact, Brodie Croyle has 9 passing TDs through those 4 games and three quarters, he had 5 through the remaining 7 games and one quarter. Basically, within a month of Prothro reaching elite status, of his rise (and Alabama's), it had been derailed. I never in my life felt that bad after a win.

As to the injury itself, in the past I've gotten in trouble for my placing blame. I think there was no justification for running that play. There had been some verbal sparring before the game, in which Urban criticized Shula for leaving players in (Brodie specifically) and letting them get hurt. That play had every appearance of Shula attempting to run the score up. It was not logically wise (fourth and long, punt or kick the wise play is to bring in special teams), nor was it wise to be leaving crucial players out in that type of play either. Prior to the game, I told my brother I thought our x-factor was Prothro, he replied that it was injuries. So, as I saw that Alabama was going for it, I ran out of my room with a sense of dread (brother in the other room watching the game). I yelled "what's he doing?", and I just knew it was incredibly stupid. I just knew nothing good could come of it, and right as I get in the room I watch this gory injury take place. It was sickening, not just from the visceral sight of it, but because of how stupid and needless it was. Don't forget that Prothro got mugged on the play, something that technically shouldn't happen either. Had it been in the current climate we might have had a greater discussion about deliberately going after a player on a play like that. As it stood, if he doesn't get mugged it doesn't happen, if Alabama kicks it doesn't happen, if he's not on the field it doesn't happen. It was just a combination of bad things culminating in a career ending injury. Mind you, it probably the most graphic injury I've seen live. Not that I could see that level of detail, but the bone went into the dirt. This wasn't just some guys knee going out, this was gory and sickening.

As to LSUFreek. I could name a lengthy list of football related things that are not funny, and one could argue that would have been much worse. Sandusky in a shower, Vick electrocuting dogs, Carruth shooting a woman, etc... However, as came up in the 247 discussion, it is comperable to something like the Theisman injury, except for the fact that Theisman wasn't hurt on fourth down, already had a lengthy career, and the tackle wasn't illegal. Having said that, was it funny? Should it be used for humor? I've never seen that happen. I don't laugh about that play, who does? So, when LSUFreek tries to deflect and act like it was perfectly fine to use it for humor, who finds it funny? In between his calling Alabama fans "Bammers" and "Gumps" he sees fit to do another picture with Saban and Prothro's injury. Basically, he reveals himself to have more in common with the Updyke type fans than the reasonable fans that most of us are. I generally thought his work was funny, and in good taste. But, he seems too full of himself and his e-fame. He talks about views and the like as though it makes him special. I got driven around in a limo because of my website. I had a guy that had hundreds of thousands of views on some of his short cartoons he made for my site (he had a good sense of humor to). This was as a teenager for both of us, who cares? Idiots rambling on youtube can get millions of views. LSUFreek has just become too full of his e-fame to simply admit that it was in poor taste.

Finally as to any thin skin comments. First, let's ask what fan base finds career ending injuries funny? Secondly, let's ask what fan base finds gory injuries funny? If you don't find that funny you have thin skin? Seriously? I didn't see anyone complaining about Updyke (for the record Auburn got so much more air time whining about their trees than Prothro's life altering injury). I didn't see Alabama fans complaining the National Championship trophy was broken. These are things thin skinned people might respond poorly to. I haven't seen Alabama fans complain about LSUFreeks work before, even when poking fun at Alabama. All I saw in this instance was the perfectly reasonable response that it's out of bounds to make fun of a gory, career ending injury.

Didn't mean for it to sound condescending (as was suggested earlier in the thread). But it does seem like a legitimate question given how upset Alabama fans seem to be about his injury. I didn't really think about it being an entry level job, though.

Not trying to make enemies, but I am not an Alabama fan, per se (only through my late father). Hopefully I can get a feel for the "hot" issues and avoid them.
i understand what your saying...sometimes you have to watch how you word things around here or it can be taking the wrong way. Personally i don't think your a troll, but their is gonna be a certain level of scrutiny in what you say and how you say it because you are a rival fan.

The problem with that is that the injury didn't really happen on that play. It took place earlier when a UF player planted his helmet precisely on Pro's shin at full speed. I commented to my wife that I didn't see how that kept from breaking his leg. Of course, it did just that. If you search back, you'll see that Pro himself confirmed that. From the moment his shin was cracked, it was going to break - if he continued to play football. It was just a matter of time...

I was thinking the same thing. And if that is the case, there was probably no way that it wasn't going to be that gruesome. Unless the training staff could have caught it before the next game (assuming he made it through that Florida game without the severe fracture).

Thanks for the clarification. But if Alabama fans love him so much, why did I read somewhere that he was working as a bank teller? Can't your boosters find something better for him?
That's not an awful question - I've often wondered why there wasn't someone who couldn't find a place for him in their company beyond being a damn bank teller.

IIRC, it happened on a punt return where he lost the ball. Prothro got up limping. In his effort to make up for that play, he did not complain about the injury, shook it off, and kept playing. What should have been a routine fracture requiring 6 weeks to heal became a life altering event. With the additional weight of the UF player on that play, the bone just shattered.

After reading LSUfreek's responses and his cavalier attitude concerning his choice of using this picture, I too, am done with him.

Re: Alabama's BCS Football Tropy Shattered

When I was down for A-Day we went to the Bryant Museum and I took a pic of the football there and the girl with me ask what the trophy next to the football was I said I dont know so I began looking at it I look around the side to see what was on it and my head hit the case for the football and it rattled and I thought OMG I have just broke this trophy and I'm not gonna make it out of this place alive so I kinda know what Mr Tinker was feeling at that time . I left the museum right after that but that was on my mind for a while after that I dont even want to think about if I had broken it.Anyways I am confident we will have the chance to have more of them in the future.RTR
