Re: Best players Ever from your high school

I attended Hueytown, Hoover/Berry and Conway High Schools.
Hueytown:
Tab Whisenhunt, Willis Beville (Both played on the 92 ChampionshipTeam) Tab was my neighbor and Willis and are grew up together. Willis joined the Navy out of high school but walked on and earned a scholarship to Alabama. Make a game saving fumble recovery in 92 against Miss State to preserve a win.
Davey Allison
Clifford Allison. Miss you. Always had a smile and made me laugh.
David Bonnett
Neil Bonnett
Bradley Morris. My cousin and could play any sport. Set several Alabama high school QB records while he was there.

Berry/Hoover:
Murry Bartow, basketball coach at East Tennessee State University and formerly at the University of Alabama at Birmingham
Jeff Brantley, baseball pitcher, former ESPN baseball analyst,
Stan White, Auburn University quarterback
Mike Kolen, Miami Dolphins linebacker
Chad Jackson, New England Patriots wide receiver
John Parker Wilson, quarterback at the University of Alabama
Ross Wilson
Josh Chapman
Kerry Murphy
Ryan Pugh

Conway High School:
Michael Allen - former Clemson University defensive back.
Andrea Gause - former University of South Carolina wide receiver.
George Gause - former Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts defensive lineman, played collegiately at the University of South Carolina.
Kerebi Gause - current Coastal Carolina University defensive lineman.
Racheed Gause - current Coastal Carolina University running back.
Buddy Gore - former Clemson University running back.
Hivera Green - current Virginia Tech defensive lineman.
Eric Huggins - current University of Oklahoma wide receiver.
Tim Jennings - played collegiate basketball at Gardner-Webb University.
Duran Lawson - current starting quarterback at The Citadel.
Chris McDonald - current wide receiver/special teams player at Coastal Carolina University.
Allen Patrick - current University of Oklahoma running back/special teams player.
Everette Sands - former running back and current assistant coach at The Citadel.
Hunter Spivey - current assistant football coach at Coastal Carolina University, former record-setting quarterback at Newberry College.
Bobby Wallace - current University of South Carolina running back.
You forgot a couple of athletes from hueytown.
Robert and Steve Higgenbotham Steve was all Sec in the early 70`s at a skinny 165 lbs. Robert was a great athelete in his own right in the late 60`s as a defensive end at a mere 180 lb.
Jeff Beard who was a running back in HS converted to a defensive lineman at Bama
Of course the most famous at Hueytown was Butch Wilson who went on to play for the Colts.
One other guy was a sprinter by the name of Emmet King. He won a gold medal along with Carl Lewis at one of the olympic games in th 4x100.

From Pope High School in Marietta, Georgia we've never had any big timers because the school is only 20 years old.

Probably the best player we had was Hanford Dixon, CB Southern Mississippi. He went on to a very good career with the Cleveland Browns. I think he made the probowl 3 or 4 times.

Hey, jthomas666. Go Wildcats!

I would add another name to the list -- Barry Talley. This guy was the best HS RB I have ever seen. No one outside of North Alabama has ever heard of him because he couldn't get in at a major college anywhere. He played one year at Tuskeege then joined the Army. But when I watch Saun Alexander run it's like watching a replay of Barry Talley. They guy was smooth and deceptively fast.

Good thread. No one I can remember in my time or since has come through Linden High School and gone on to great things in football. However, it did produce Roy Rogers... who played BB at the Capstone.

Re: Best players Ever from your high school

Nice list, but I have to disagree with a couple of points. Eric R. was a good ball player, but not as good as Chris Gray. As a matter of fact Chris might be the best besides Murray Legg. You also omitted Robert Davis. He may have been a head case after he left school, but was probably the best pure runner Homewood has ever had. And at High School level was much better than ER. This is just my opinion.
Actually I played with the best pure QB Homewood ever had and probably one of if not the best pure running back. Neither of which played college ball thanks to our having 4 head coaches in 4 years and everything just got totally screwed up. The best pure QB Homewood ever had was a guy named Barry Brown. When we were in 7th grade he could throw the ball 65 or 70 yards flat-footed. He was turned (for reasons that still baffle the mind) into a DB by a coach named Wayne Sheets (who was with Homewood for many years as a "O" line coach) and things went downhill from there. I can't remember the RB's name but he and his brother were amazing athletes. They were only at Homewood for a year or two and then transferred out.

Barry was (and you can ask anybody who played sports with us) the best pure athlete I've seen in many, many years and certainly for his time. His size was fine (just over 6' maybe 6'1") and likely around 185 or 190lbs at the time. He was a fantastic baseball player who pitched like Nolan Ryan, he was a point guard in basketball and just a great athlete who never got the shot to play college football thanks to coaching. Had we had one coach for 4 years he would have ended up at Bama playing QB...there is no doubt in my mind. In our freshman year he threw a ball to me (I was a WR) and he was flushed out of the pocket to his left (he's right handed) and I was streaking down the right side of the field and he threw the ball off of his back foot from the 50 across his body and hit me in the far right corner of the endzone...again he was just 14 years old at the time.
