My wife and I dropped Lily off at the airport at 5:00 yesterday morning. She's taking AP Art History and is fascinated by the subject. She's on a class field trip to New York for the long weekend. They visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art Yesterday. Still to go are visits to the Brooklyn Museum and Museum of Modern Art. They will also go to the architecturally-impressive St. Patrick's Cathedral. Needless to say, Lily is having a blast. :)

That sounds like a great field trip. She will love it.

Not my kid, obviously, but my niece will be starting at Bama in the Fall, with a substantial scholarship. Not 100% because her academics, while good, aren’t scholarship worthy but my gosh, she made up for it with her extracurriculars: camp counselor, life guard, SGA at County High in Tuscaloosa (including secretary of the sophomore class, junior class president and a dual role as senior class/SGA president).

I spent a lot of time with her when she was 1-3 while I was in grad school at Bama, and while I love all my nieces (5 as of today) she and I have a special bond. Last I talked to her about it, she was wanting to go into Elementary Ed with a goal of eventually becoming a principal. Things can change obviously once she gets in, but she has a very clear and admirable goal.

My youngest son, 33, has been a trooper the past few months. His wife, is dealing with breast cancer, taking chemo (last treatment was last Thursday). He is working everyday, keeping clothes washed, grass mowed and taking care of their 3 year old daughter. Hard yes, but God is good!

It's been said before and is so true.

A person's character is not defined by the hardships and difficulties he faces. It is revealed.

You have much to be proud of Mike. Obviously his character is a product of his upbringing.

Carry on the good fight and God Bless!

With all the landscaping that my wife and I have done recently, there's plenty of space to have various themed gardens. Lily wants a butterfly garden, so we've installed various plants that will attract them. Lily wanted to buy and plant milkweed herself so see if we could get some monarch butterflies. A couple of weeks ago the milkweed was discovered, and soon we had fat caterpillars going to town on these plants. About a dozen made it to the chrysalis stage, and over the last week we've had new monarch butterflies in our garden. Pretty cool. :)

My niece (last name blacked out for obvious reasons) leading the Pledge of Allegiance at her HS graduation on Saturday evening. Couldn’t make it, so I had to catch it on the HS’s Facebook account. I was so proud to see her graduate, and have such a prominent role not only in the ceremony itself, but for her class and indeed the entire school as SGA President. Will be a freshman at Bama next year.

Lily is all but done with her junior year. Seven classes is a full load, but she is also taking Latin 2 online. That is the only "regular" classes she is taking and will take that exam tomorrow. Of her other classes, two are honors, and five are AP. The AP classes allow her to take a national exam to determine if she gets college credit. She recently took all five and will find out this summer how many more college classes she can waive. She took and passed both AP exams during her sophomore year. My wife and I have no problem with Lily waiving college courses that are not in her career path. But, even if she clears the hurdle on science classes, we still want her to take those classes in college so the knowledge doesn't become cold when she gets to higher level science classes.

Next year, she only needs five classes to graduate. So, she'll have a relatively easy glide path to the finish line. She'll focus on the SAT. With her schedule this past school year (school work load and the medical mission), she only took the SAT once. She scored high enough to qualify for a 75% Bright Futures scholarship. So, that's a good start. She'll have several more opportunities this summer and next year to see if she can get 100%. It's all just gravy at this point.

That's very impressive and I know you and Mrs. Bodhi are SO VERY proud of her!

Thanks for sharing with us - it really made my day! :)

My oldest graduated high school this past weekend. He took a tremendous workload in his 4 years, probably 15 AP courses, scored perfect on at least half of them, national merit, 1530 SAT, on and on. We are so proud of him. The future is yours son, go and take it!
Wow - congrats to all. Lot to be proud of!

That last comment reminds me of the very end of the movie "Spencer's Mountain"......always makes me cry, dangit....

"Going far, son?"

"Right far..."

One of my fav. movies.....

Just got a text from Lily that she passed all five AP exams. That's seven total college classes that she can waive. (y)

I just now realized that I have been on this site for almost 20 years and remember when you had stories of her as a small child. Congrats and all but damn we are all getting old.
Man, that's the truth. I experience every one of Lily's achievements with a dad's pride, but there's also some sadness. Time only moves in one direction, and that adorable little girl is (mostly) grown up now. 💕😥
