I agree that we can’t win a championship of any kind with Milroe at QB. He can make some spectacular plays. He has a good long ball. He has great legs. But Texas laid his weaknesses bare, and every DC on the schedule will try to follow that model.
The unfixable weakness is that the plays you’d call to slow down a pass rush and loosen up a stacked box are exactly the plays he can’t consistently execute. Everybody and their brother will play 7 men up, cheat a safety and tee off on the OL like John Daly on a Titleist. USF might not have the personnel to execute that, but other opponents most certainly do.
So I do think Buchner is our best option. His history, however, is by no means perfect. I’m thinking he can run the short to middle stuff, especially over the middle of the field, and make some quick decisions. IOW, he opens up the playbook.
BUT….he’s had his own struggles with ball security. So it would appear that we have one guy who struggles with ball security and limits my play calling, vs. another guy who also struggles with ball security, but can run the full playbook.
Fully realizing it’s probably not going to be a perfect solution, I’ll take Door #2, Monte.
