NCAA Numbers

The Friday File: Now that college athletes can earn money for their name, image, and likeness (NIL), wow are they starting to rake it in. In NCAA Division I men’s basketball, the average income of the starting five is now $3.3 million. For women’s basketball it’s $730,000. In football, the average income of starting players in the Power Four conferences is $10.7 million. Absolutely astounding, and good for them.

Is that 22 players totaling $10.7, or each of the 22 makes $10.7?

Most jobs require an apprenticeship or education. Most people enjoy that part of their development. Amateur sports served this purpose in the past. Turning college sports into a profession is wrong. Not all change is wrong, but people love to play sports and the status quo should have remained.

This is just getting completely nuts. Some of these numbers are more than true professionals make. Is this sustainable? How long before all of these "donors" realize they aren't getting their bang for the buck and it all comes crashing down.

Milroe was in the top 5 this year at under $3MM.
Uncle Sam says thank you! And why would the Federal Government try to change this? Quite likely the bulk of this NIL money comes form long term capital gains, which would be taxed at 20%, or some other venture with deductions to reduce the tax further. In exchange, it is given to these athletes who are going to be taxed at 37% for the numbers we are talking about. Don't look for Congress to get involved.
