Clarion-Ledger: Is timing right for Mississippi State upset?

I'm thinking this is one of those games where there's so much talk about us coming off the tough game and MSU having the bye week, that it won't actually matter. There's always those types of games in the NCAA basketball tourney where there's a dangerous 12 seed that everybody talks about making the upset and basically it just warns the other team to not just go through the motions. I think that's what all the talk of this game is doing for our guys this week. Everybody's talking about it and they hear it so they know that they can't just go out there unprepared. I also think that since many people are picking State, our guys will go out there with something to prove to all the 'experts'.

all i know is that this is the perfect time for us to find a running game that can work consistently against a good defense. this game will show us where we are in terms of being ready to go destroy burn down the barner land and take back the state this year. we can pass against a good defense, but will we be able to run? throughout the season we have stopped the run, as well as the pass with our D, but can we be consistent enough to beat the barners and whatever bowl team we play??? stay tuned and we shall see!!! i think miss st having some good wins is exactly what gets them beat cause unlike last year they wont be over looked or taken lightly. and they might be a tad overconfident. last year was probably the last win for miss st for a loong time.

MSU's front seven on defense are pretty good. However, their secondary is going to have a difficult time with our receivers. Expect our offense to be more productive then you might think if we can protect. As soon as they start overloading the secondary then we should be able to get some good runs, especially draw plays. Translation: pass to set up the run.

Someone was talking about our running defense. We held Tennessee to 107 and LSU to 87 yards, the only team that has ran all over us is Arkansas and State doesn't have ANYONE on the caliber of McFadden and Jones. Also and i hope this doesn't jinx us but i believe we've had at least one turnover in the last three games. I can't really remember if we had an INT in the Houston game or not.

i am worried about this game. i watched a state offense with two big backs destroy kentucky. those two backs will be hard for our defense handle. our young defense has not really stopped any team but tenn, when they stopped running the ball in the second half. it is still the same situation. the offensive line will have to step up and protect jpw, and give a chance to sustain drives, and get points to hall and brown. i really dont expect much from our running game with two pony backs. once again, the offensive line will be the difference in this game.

I totally concur with your assessment of this game. We need to be vigilant and play our A-game to beat this team, especially under all the circumstances.

You can bet that Sly will pound us with his running game until we can prove that we're up to stopping it and he won't stray from it like the viles. Our boys in the trenches are going to be challenged all day long. It's gonna be a gut check.

I am sure this will probably be the game plan but MSU doesn't have the horses to beat us being one dimensional. The key is to get a lead on them and make them play from behind and then you pull them out of their game plan.

The way to deal with a running team is the get a 10-14 point lead and force them to start throwing the ball to catch up. So the key is for our OL to give Wilson time to throw the ball and get on the scoreboard early.
