NOTE: THIS THREAD IS FROM MARCH 2005

I say yes. He has carried this team to places that no other Bama coach could. He recruits well, and is a SEC competitor just about every year. Plus a few years they are even a National Competitor. So I say Yes, he should stay. Your thoughts?????

No need to fire him.

A: I just don't see where we could get anyone better. It ain't like we're a big time B-Ball school that would have top level coaches knocking down the door trying to get here.

B: He's a good recruiter and his prep and gameday skills are improving each year.

Should we keep him? I just hope he doesn't leave us for an ACC, Big11, or Pac10 team in the future. The way these yahoos on the board are acting, we don't deserve him and he certainly doesn't deserve this crap.

Here we go again . . .

If you'll look back to about two weeks ago, we had the same sort of poll. The results were unanimous - about 57-0 "Keep CMG."

Last year we struggled in the middle of the season. This year, at the end. Nobody that understands Alabama and Basketball would possibly make a good case why a coach who has returned Alabama to contender status should leave. VA in the ACC put up with Pete for 7 years without them becoming a contender. Have this discussion if you need to again. I'm going to go sit and watch the rest of the tournament without being nervous for 2 hr and 15 minute intervals. Could somebody please bring me some nice meals this week? My wife will be out of town and I won't be able to get out of the recliner due to the roundball.

Live_4_Bama,

Sorry, I kind of overreacted before actually reading your post. In your post, you state your support of CMG, which I certainly think he deserves. I really believe he will continue to improve our program. I'm terribly disappointed in today's game, but it in no way diminishes my support of CMG.

I think Gottfried recruits well and runs a clean, classy program. I definitely hope he stays with Alabama. However, I do hope he continues to work hard to improve his X's and O's ability. I don't think we are always prepared and I'm not a big fan of our offense, but I do like Coach Gottfried and hope he continues to improve.

This Is A Stupid Question!!!

Of course he stays and will stay...a LONG time! Although Mark does need to recognize and admit that he is getting outcoached A LOT, especially offensively. It seems in some interviews that Mark's been a bit arrogant about recognizing his weaknesses. We really need a super offensive mind to soup up our offense...this 4 corner, stand around, wait for Kennedy to make a move offense is BORING!!! I'm tired of it, the press is tired of it, I'm sure the players are tired of it...LET'S MOVE IT ON!

That sums up my feelings entirely. Very well said. More specifically, I wish we'd take more chances on defense and try to mix up our offensive sets some.

We were...

not able to take any more chances on "D" than we did today. Every time we took a chance, they drew blood. I'm not sure many college teams have enough talent - or time - to run the HP...

Earle (seems like I said that a moment ago)...

You bring up a very interesting point. Back in UCLA's heyday, the HP offense was being run by people who had four years in the program. In our program, we are currently only keeping the best players at a maximum of three years. Does the offense that CMG runs present a dilemna considering that incoming guys need more time to "fit in" than say Mike Anderson's offense? Offhand, I can think of at least 6 players in the past 4 years who spent (or will spend) less than 4 years in the system (Williams, Thomas, Grizzard, Wallace, Winston (if leaves), Felix, George (2005 recruit)). Would we benefit by either (1) going after less profiled recruits that will stay for the full four years or (2) change the offense to a less sophisticated system? Have been wondering this for a couple of years now. BTW, I say keep CMG but encourage him to adopt some new approaches as well as bring in some solid assistants who have shown themselves to be superb at developing fundamentals (TA is the prototype). Note, again I say note, we will not find a better coach that MG!

I'm not sure...

we can hold CMG, let alone a "better" coach. When were hot this year, CMG had to beg for fans to come. "Real" basketball coaches don't come into a situation like that. I think CMG came solely because he was an alum and wanted to make his mark at his alma mater. Now, for the HP. I don't think you can run it with lower-talented personnel, and, as you've noted, it doesn't help when they leave in three years - or less. It requires big men who can pass from the key. Most big guys don't learn that in HS. At least, not any more. Problem is, that's what he learned under Wooden and he believes in it...

My biggest fear is we lose CMG. And, your first paragraph, while it may be your opinion, is still very true I'm afraid.

Just today right after the game on AM 690, one of the fans that is famous on the Finebaum show called in saying CMG needed to be fired. This fan knows nothing about basketball and cares only for football (his words), and he calls in wanting the basketball coach fired. BTW, he wants to fire Coach Shula too. This kind of behavior is all too common among BAMA fans. How I wish we could appreciate what we have.

I don't understand people that call in radio shows or post on here that want CMG fired. Do we want to be like UT? They fired a coach that took them to 4 straight NCAA tournaments. I'll grant that under Jerry Green, his players had some off-the-court problems. We've been to 4 straight NCAA's. Our players have class and they graduate. We're not the only team to lose a 5-12 seed in the last 20 years. CBS flashed a graphic that 5-12 seeds were 8-8 in the last few tournaments. I'll take CMG over a lot of coaches.

This loss bites, but we'll be back.

I don't know the answer to this complaint. I feel CMG is as good as we're going to get. I don't think the talent pool is as good as it was 20 years ago. All the southeastern teams are struggling wiyh this. The 13 scholarship rule hurts the quality of the teams. Discipline is more of a problem. Every player thinks he has to impress pro scouts and does this to the detriment of the team. I think CMG has struggled some in recruiting( see signing 3 post players that weighed less than 190 lbs. in one year) He came into this year short on ball handling guards. We've had an exciting team the last few years and that sure beats what we had when CMG got here. Let's just say " wait til next year".
