Where ever there's BBQ, Bourbon & Football
Being a collector of football cards and baseball cards for most of my life I can tell you exactly what these "creepy men" are doing. These "creepy men" probably own a card/comic book shop and are trying to get these auto's to sell in their store. Or these guys have been contracted by the owners of these shops to get these autos.

Most of them are total jerks and will go to great lengths to get the autos. College autographed items never carried much value in the "collectors world" until the last ten to fifteen years. It's gotten progressively more popular and more "valuable". I've been approached by card dealers and offered a fee to get things signed. I decline and go about my business. I can see where college athletes can get aggravated.

To get this back into perspective, this started out talking about a kid who hasn't made any significant money yet. My concern is with him and other Bama kids, not a pro baseball player. And I do think there's something creepy about a guy bringing a box full of miniature helmets for Cody to sign...

Speaking of creepy autograph hunters, I got my son Cory Reamer's autograph at the mall today. He was a really nice guy. I felt bad that no one was in line.

My son is 9 months old so I'm starting him out right!

Well, Cory wasn't as high profile, and there have been several signing before him now. I, for one, appreciate and treasure his contributions over the last several years...

BB, are you saying you are a "creepy man" since you collect football and baseball cards? I wasn't clear on whether you get your cards autographed are not.

I have no shame. I guess I'm a "creepy man", but as I stated earlier, my autographs are for my collection only. I've never sold anything although I've been offered very good money for some of my autographed items. I was offered as much as $2,000 for one item in my collection and this was over ten years ago. I never even considered selling it.

Also, I agree with what you said about college autographed items. I'm amazed how this market has taken off in the last ten or twelve years.

Well, I'm currently 34 and have hung up my "creepy man" attire but back in my younger days (early to mid 20's) I tried my hand at collecting auto graphs and some as a kid. I got Brett Favre's, Will Clark, Terry Bradshaw to name a few.

I still collect football cards. Baseball cards I stopped collecting years ago. Got sick of the game. Played until I was 21 and simply got burnt out on the entire sport. Watching it and playing it. I collect for my enjoyment and for my two year old son. My dad passed his baseball cards down to me and it was one of the most exciting times in my childhood when my dad got out his old collection and said "Here son, these are yours now." I'm doing the same for my son.

Hope he gets as excited as I did when my dad passed his down.

Let me clarify. "Creepy" is a guy showing up with a boxful of trinkets which he fully intends to sell. "Creepy" is sticking your foot out to trip a college player on the way into or out of the locker room and getting POed at getting stiffed because he, somehow, owes you. There's nothing creepy about your private collection. It's not my gig, but I do some things I'm sure you'd think were crazy. In fact, if you looked back over my history of high-risk activities, you almost certainly think I was crazy. Different strokes...

Earle, I appreciate you being open minded enough to not think of some of us autograph seekers as "creepy." As you said, different strokes for different folks. Still there are some here that probably find what I do as a little out of the ordinary, but it does not bother me. I know people that have their hobbies that are not my thing, but I don't think anything of it. We're not all wired the same. As long as someone's hobby does not hurt or wrong others, they can knock themselves out as far as I'm concerned.

I've seen the people that you are talking about that get upset because they did not get an autograph that they are owed. I've seen the people with a stack of pics, cards or helmets to get signed and it's obvious they plan on selling the items. I've seen people go to a player in a restaurant to ask for an autograph. I've seen people break in line in front of kids at Fan Day and push kids aside to get an autograph. I've also seen a few near riots at Fan Day. All of this is sickening and pathetic to me.

Thanks for not considering me to be in the "creepy" category.

I've seen something like this happen before. Someone showed up at Shula's weeknight radio show when it was at Baumhower's I believe (not sure) and gave Shula a stack of pictures to sign. Shula signed one and gave him the pictures back and the guy went ballistic. Shula wound up signing more pictures if you can believe it.

I was at SEC Media days years ago and there was someone who sold memorabilia on E-Bay who was giving small kids multiple mini helmets for David Greene to sign. The kids would bring the helmets back to him after they got them autographed.

It's totally out of line for one person to want any more than one or two autographs from a player or coach. Unfortunately there are a lot of people that get autographs for nothing more than personal gain. There is a huge market out there for autographs depending on the player or coach. I've never sold any of my autographed items. It's all been strictly for my personal collection although I have given autographed items to family or friends.
It's becoming more common for these 'stars' to insist that they personalize an autographed item. You're less likely to be able to sell a helmet signed "To Chuck, Roll Tide", than one that just says "Roll Tide". That's become their way of (as close to as possible) ensuring that the item isn't going straight to the autographed item market.

I've noticed that same trend. It's kind of interesting, because it used to be the opposite, since it's faster to do just a blanket-type autograph. I guess you could answer the question "Who do I make this to," with "Oh, my name is 'whom it may concern.'" :D

I wish I was remotely close, I would have stopped by for sure. It's sad when Alabama fans are already reaching the point that it's like "no big deal, all he did was play a integral part to Alabama winning a National Championship". He stepped up big time when Alabama needed him.

On that note, keep in mind that that scenario is the perfect time to get autographs, talk to the player or what ever. It's set up for that. Don't bring a box of stuff but if it's slow you might get to sit and chat a bit. It's all about time and place...

It shows you where priorities are when "fans" will go and hound players in other settings with boxes full of stuff or what not and then there is a actual signing and they can't be troubled to show up... ridiculous.

I've heard of the pro athletes doing this, but I have only encountered this one time and I've been getting autographs for twenty years now. Current and former Alabama football players autographs is all I collect. The one time I was asked who do I make this out to it was Demeco Ryans after his career at Alabama was over. I got him to autograph a #35 full size Alabama helmet. I guess he thought I was going to sell it on E-Bay.

Exactly. If it's a scheduled event, I will be there. But I'm not going to camp out at a hotel or outside the stadium waiting for the players to come out. I don't have that much time on my hands. I know some people do this, but when they have stacks of items wanting signed and then there is a kid waiting. I don't like that.

I don't know what may have happened with Cody, but my daughter said he was very nice and sent me this pic she got at the senior bowl.:)

On a side note, I don't collect autographs, but it irks me to see them being auctioned on Ebay and sold in stores. What makes it right for some people to make a profit off of someone just being nice?

Yep, same little girl on my avitar.

Roll Tide!!!

Went to Senior Bowl practice this past Thursday with my 12 year old son and in fact stayed at same hotel as both teams, coaches, etc. Both my son and I had on our Alabama shirts while there. When South team buses arrived at hotel, was out front and got several pictures made of players and my son. My son was also getting autographs too. Tebow was the first player's picture we got and he was quite nice. We next spotted Cody getting off bus and we were standing right next to him. I asked him did he mind if I got a picture of him and my son and my son was asking him for an autograph too. We might as well been speaking in Chinese or apparently he's gone deaf and his eyesight is going as well. Not only did he not look at us, there was no reponse at all. He stuck his nose in the air and shuffled on by us. There were several other people dressed in Alabama clothing and they too were ignored by him. I was really surprised by the way he acted and he must have forgotten where he came from. As a booster I helped pay for his tuition. Really sad to see him act that way, especially to a child. All the other Bama players were very very nice and polite. All the other players of both squads were cordial as well. No other player acted like Cody. Unreal.

I wanted to go but my parents decided to come and see us that afternoon so it didn't work out. My husband didn't seem as excited about getting Cory's autograph and when I asked why he said he'd spent too much time over the last 4 years yelling "DANGIT, CORY!" at the TV. :rolleye2:
