Folks, I'm doing some research about an old hamburger business, Colonel Dixie. I believe there is just one location left--in Mobile, AL.

Have any of you guys eaten at a Colonel Dixie location? If so, where? I'm trying to compile some preliminary background information for a possible magazine article.

As a young fellow back in the 1960s, I recall several Colonel Dixies in south Mississippi and Alabama.. I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall seeing Colonel Dixie in Pensacola, FL.

I'd be interested in how many Colonel Dixie drive ins there might have been and the scope of their locations. I'd like to try to find out where their headquarters was located..

Well, I can tell you that there used to be one here in Mobile at the corner of McGregor and Old Shell Roads. It's been closed for years now. The only remaining one (that I'm aware of) is on Government Street.

When we were growing up though, they weren't particularly known for their burgers, but for their "dixie dogs" -- hot dogs all the way.

I think I may have encountered one in Albany, Georgia, way back in the Carter Administration. Not certain, it was a long time ago.

Yep...there was one between Overlook and Moffat as well...where the block buster went in many years ago.

We used to sneak out of church on Sunday from Springhill Baptist and go to the Colonel...good times! They also owned Ritchie's BBQ

Displaced: I had forgotten about that one near Shaw. The one left on Government Street is extremely "worn down" to say the least. Doesn't look like somewhere that I'd like to go to grab a burger! :)

Didn't know they owned Ritchie's BBQ -- we still have one of those on Government (closer to Skyline).

Thanks Guys..Also....

I live on the MS gulf coast.. As a kid, I used to ride over to Mobile with my mom about once a month to shop at some of the Mobile stores.. In the early/mid 60s, there used to be a big Wal-Mart type store called Atlantic Mills on Hwy 90..It was located on the north side of 90 between Azalea Road and I believe Demetropolis Rd near the Skyland area.. There was a Colonel Dixie in the vicinity of the Atlantic Mills. I had seen several of them around town.. I know there was one in Gulfport, MS..there may have been one in Pascagoula/Moss Point, MS. I didn't know if it was a very localized chain or one that might have had locations throughout MS, AL, FL, GA...etc..

The Dixie Dogs were mighty delicious to a 10-year old shopper back in the mid 60s--especially when he had some money left over from buying some cool GI Joe stuff...

Hmmm, "A&W". They used to have an old A&W drive in at Dauphin Island many years ago. We still have What-A-Burger's!
