A couple of years ago, a guy (ex-con) from another county out on parole saw a Hooterville kid fall into a raging stream and get swept away. The ex-con fished the kid out of the stream before the kid drowned, but it turns out the ex-con was out of his county without permission, thus violating his parole.
The judge told him, okay (because he had saved the kid's life), but don't let me catch you violating your parole again. Happy ending for all concerned.
Reminds me of this scene from the classic flick "The Eagle Has Landed"......except the soldier here didn't survive......

Prior to the landings of D-Day, a group of German paratroopers are tasked with dropping behind enemy lines and assassinate the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill as he passes by a tiny village en route to inspect an airfield. The group tasked with the mission disguises as Polish paratroopers exercising as they wait for their target. "I have one request, a demand, actually. We are not spies, and we will not be treated as such by the British. If anything goes wrong, we will wear our own uniforms under the Polish uniforms, and if necessary, we will fight and die as what we are, German paratroopers." -Kurt Steiner A memorable scene from a great movie.

It's too hot out to leave kids in the car!
Yesterday, deputies responded to a call at Publix (3750 Roscommon Drive, Ormond Beach) about an unattended child in a car in the parking lot.
Around 3 p.m., Publix management noticed the car was parked in full sun, no shade, not running, with the windows cracked. A 2-year-old child was inside and appeared lethargic. The Publix manager reached in to unlock the car and bring the child into the store to cool off.
Eventually the child's grandmother approached and took custody of the child. She left Publix but was later located by deputies who also checked on the child and found her to be in good health.
It was determined the child was left unattended in the hot vehicle for about 16 minutes.
The grandmother (Elena Grady, 63, Longwood) was charged with child neglect and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where she was booked and released overnight on a bond of $3,000.
The outside temperature at the time of the incident was 91 degrees, with a heat index of 101 degrees.
A car parked in the sun on a 90-degree day can reach 120 degrees within 30 minutes, and 138 degrees after 90 minutes.
Let's avoid tragedy and remember NOT to leave children, pets, or vulnerable adults in a hot vehicle even if it's only supposed to be a few minutes. Thanks all!

I love the DC US attorney's comment near the end of the clip:

"There's still more work to do..."

Dude....it's the year 2024..........when are you guys going to get a handle on this (expletive)!

Crimes of poverty will always exist until we solve the root causes of poverty (increasing economic inequality, economic scarcity, brutal economic system design). Nobody would steal a car if everyone had enough to eat, a safe place to live, etc.

I used to believe this but the goalposts are ever moving. We have - by far - the wealthiest 'poor' in history here in the US yet crime is still around. Most of those designated as poor have big screens, cell phones, and are obese - yes, it's 2024, but none of these things indicate lack.

Multiple cars get stolen every day in Memphis just for joy rides (commonly intersection shutdowns where they can do burnouts with multiple cars, often ending with them torching the stolen rides) - not because they lack transportation.

It is part of the issue, but there's a lot more to crime than lack in the US.

I think you took him too literally.

I gave a specific example of what I believe - most crimes in the US are due to character, not poverty.
Yet.....the anti-gun folks continue to avoid this part of the discussion.

Is it possible to prevent all crime by campaigning for people to be morally better.....with more emphasis on the character of an individual?

Absolutely no....but we aren't even trying.

I think it starts at the family unit.

@mdb-tpet - if I were attacking the problem of crime....I would take a hard look at why so many kids only have 1 parent. So many without a father in their life. So many who are living with their grandparents...or in foster.

Turning that around would be more a matter of our community leaders & role models to speak out EVERY chance they had. And there are many that do.....unfortunately the general public don't see it...and that includes a whole population of folks would would benefit by it.

New preliminary data from major U.S. cities shows a sharp drop in violent crime in the first half of the year — more than 25% in some communities — as the COVID-era crime wave recedes.
  • 54 of the 69 major cities in the report saw drops in violent crime — defined as homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault — in the first half of 2024, according to the Axios review.
  • Columbus, Ohio, experienced the largest percentage decline in violent crime in the nation, with a massive 41% drop so far in 2024. Omaha, Nebraska, was second with a 30% decrease.
  • Miami and Washington, D.C., so far, have seen 29% declines in violent crime.
  • Austin, Texas, saw a 28% drop, followed by New Orleans with a 26% decrease. Both cities have been under fire for rising crime rates in recent years.
The intrigue: The Axios review also found that the number of homicides in the 69 reported cities fell by more than 17% during the first half of 2024 compared to the last period last year.

  • Boston experienced a dramatic 78% drop in homicides.
  • Philadelphia was among others that saw a big fall in homicides, with a 42% decrease in 2024.

A good job, affordable healthcare, affordable child care, and affordable safe housing would probably help some to hold families together.

We could start by not allowing a 34-time convicted felon obtain the highest office in the land.

Why, no one had any beef with Marion Berry being a convicted Mayor!!!! Goose, Gander!!!!

Apparently being a felon is only a problem for Repubs, our Dumb butt Virginia Dem Gov wanted felons to get voting rights back. So, ok, I'll agree they get voting voting rights back, but then you also got to give their gun rights back too. The Constitution is not selective about whom gets rights, and so elected officials shouldn't get to pick/chose either.

For the record, IMO, felons shouldn't get any rights restored, unless the conviction is overturned somehow... Don't do crime, if can't do time...

I thought the people of DC were foolhardy to put Barry back in office.

If someone has completed their sentence I don’t have a problem with them being allowed to vote.
