I'm certainly not a lawyer but it seems to me that, based on what I've read and heard about the testimony, a conviction of criminally negligent homicide isn't unrealistic. I'm open to other thoughts and acknowledge that I might be ill-informed, so I'd like to hear why that's not correct.
I'm also not a lawyer, but I think there has to be some discretion in the application of the law. In cases like this, where someone reacted (in arguably heroic fashion) to protect others from someone acting insane, where the death was obviously unintentional, I'd argue he shouldn't even be charged with anything that would result in jail time.

If anything, we want people like Penny walking among us, imo.

Protests have already started outside the courthouse where Penny was acquitted and it's starting to get ugly. On the bright side, it sure was nice to see all those employers out there letting their employees have the day off to go protest. I can barely get a sick day.

But seriously, if I'm Penny, I'm packing my crap as fast as I can and getting the hell out of NY and never looking back.

Walgreens' CEO has admitted that locking up items to avoid shoplifting has not worked - and it will close stores instead.

Not only has the practice not curbed theft, it has dramatically hit sales.
Ya think? Locking everything up and leaving one employee on the floor that you can never find turned out not to be a winning strategy. Whodathunkit?

Nothing is locked up at my local Walgreens, but I went to one in another town and it was a pain to get stuff because it was all locked up. I can see why it would hit sales. I didn’t want to deal with it either.

I had no idea. I have not been in a Walgreens in decades. I dated a girl that worked as a pharmacy tech and after our bitter breakup she kept tabs on me via looking me up for meds I was taking. Seriously, this psycho chick knew every tie a had the sniffles. I switched pharmacies and never thought about Walgreens again.

It's done based on theft rates. As you can imagine, lower income areas are typically far more likely to deal with widespread theft.

The rest of the story is they cut staff dramatically at the same time and they were already short-staffed. The consequence was, to buy anything, you had to go search for staff. OOPS! They're doubling as cashiers. I've had that happen more than once and I haven't been back in a long, long time...
