The good thing is that our offense is built for this guy. His footwork might need work, but we aren't going to pass more than 20 times a game as long as the run is working. We'll still be a run-heavy team next year and if Fluker can get on campus in late May/early June...I expect him to be our starting LT and Carpenter to play RG.

We might not have a terribly huge drop off in run blocking, we'll definitely have to protect our left-side a little more in pass protect. Andre was so good, he helped the right side too by being able to lock down his side by himself. I had an OU fan on another board (talking about Fluker) tell me something pretty astounding (considering where we were at a few years ago): "you were saying Alabama's line was going to have a drop off. You forget, Alabama is an elite team now: you don't rebuild, you reload."

Fluker isn't going to win the Jacobs and Outland next year, but this kid is every bit as capable of following Andre's career path: start from day one, rack up accolades in-conference in year two, be a top-tier draft pick and All-American by year three. With our staff, I have no doubt that Fluker will be in Andre's income bracket by 22.
I agree with most of that, and this is somewhat off topic, but concerning your first paragraph I actually read yesterday an interview with Jim McElwain that he considers the run-heavy offense "boring" and that he would have no problem throwing much more if the correct people are available in our lineup. Obviously with this recruiting class already we have some more dangerous receivers, and it seems like we would move towards maybe not a pass-heavy, but a more balanced offense. Would this affect anything with Fluker or any other linemen you think?

CJM said the run heavy game was not boring as long as you are winning but I believe that with G.Mac under center, and the bevy of WR's Bama will have next year (especially if we get RR), we will see quiet a bit more passing. As you stated, we can expect a more balanced attack.

Its a good thing Texas doesn't play 'Bama, DJ would take out everybody on their team. Both Okafor and Howell are committed to Texas

I believe McElwain is a coordinator who will be "heavy" on whatever works with our personnel. Still, our personnel strengths still appear to be leaning on the run game...especially considering that we don't quite have an LSU-like WR corp yet.

As amazing as he looks on video, it doesn't do him justice when you see him in person. He is massive and intimidating. I can't wait to see him in Crimson.

I'll also throw out the opinion that I would be shocked if he didn't start day 1.

Coach McElwain talked about this during media day in New Orleans. Most of his career he's been associated with passing attacks. Seems he wants to eventually see Alabama morph into a very balanced attack. Of course most every coordinator is going to say that. However, I think its unfair for rival fans to characterize his attack as run oriented. They need to just look at his past, and what we're recruiting offensively.

Lol, here you go...

Fluker is an absolute beast, and he deserves every bit of the attention he is getting. All of these mediocre-at-best former assistant high school coaches -- most of which only have about five or six years of actual coaching experience at that level -- that Scout.com parades around as "experts" that have been low-balling Fluker are ridiculously overpaid even if they only get a penny per year salary.

The bottom line is that Fluker has the kind of raw athletic ability to have a bust in Canton. I haven't seen a prospect with his size and athleticism since Jonathon Ogden came out of St. Albans in the early 1990's... not even Andre Smith himself had this kind of raw physical talent. Fluker is a good four inches taller than Smith, has a much wider wingspan, plus he can play at a bigger weight, and honestly he's probably even a bit more athletic.

I'm not saying he will ultimately end up being that good, mind you, but this kid has once-in-a-generation talent and raw ability, and his performances in San Antonio are simply showing that fairly obvious point. There is simply no limit to this young man's potential. Again, the Scout.com "experts" are idiots, the kid is unreal, and in all fairness he may very well be the best player in the country this year, period. Even better than Randle, Richardson, Kirkpatrick, Barkley, etc.

We just need to fight like crazy to hang on to him. I don't think it will be an issue, mind you, but you can rest assured that LSU is going to do absolutely everything they can to get him to renege on his commitment to Alabama. Les Miles would probably personally give a testicle to get this kid away from us, and hell, rightfully so.

Been away from the computer for a few days, but I just want to reiterate how much Fluker has impressed EVERY person watching this week. Rivals.com's Barry Every says he's the best OL prospect he's seen in 20 years.

re: D.J. Fluker AA Practice Updates: Pancakes Okafor/ Shows Skills/ Wins Race (Videos)

Fluker tweeked his knee today in practice, and didn't stand out as much as a result. That may limit his performance somewhat in the game itself, but he's already proven what he can do. All I can say is everyone should enjoy the three years he will be here at Alabama, it'll be over before you know it.

And, by the way, Dre Kirkpatrick is playing with a fractured hand. I'm not sure when it happened, be it in the playoffs or in practices, but either way he is going to play through it, though it may limit him some.

Bottom line, some minor injuries to Kirkpatrick and Fluker may limit their performance somewhat on Saturday in San Antonio, but those two guys have more than proved their worth to this point. With Fluker in particular, people are just absolutely shocked about how dominant he has been... even opposing players like Chris Davenport -- LSU's five star defensive tackle -- have just effectively stood in awe at the show he has put on.

The general feeling is that everyone knew he would be that good, but no one really thought he would be THAT good right.

Right; It is very exciting just watching him in a short clip. I can't imagine what it will be like to see him in an entire game. I sure hope he can show some of that Saturday in San Antonio, otherwise I will have to wait until August to get my Fluker fix.

I wouldn't put DJ in quite the same category as Andre Smith at this stage in his football career, but there is no doubt he is an outstanding prospect. He is going to be something to behold before he leaves Alabama.

I'm curious to see if he will start as a true freshman.
In all honesty, he's more talented than Andre is. Not as developed, as yet. But, that will come and I'm guessing quickly. He's quicker now than Andre will ever be. If he starts next year, our pass blocking will improve greatly.
