Actually, I didn't hear a word Kannell said, just responded to what people relayed here. I refuse to watching anything he or Galloway are on as they are worthless.
When Kannell comes on that is when I turn the channel but sometimes I can't turn it fast enough to hear stupidity that comes out. I didn't say anything about ESPN being stupid, just Kanell. I don't think I could have found the game on the SEC Network last night so I had to watch ESPN to see it.This is 'FUNNY' everyone bashing Kannell, saying he's stupid and so forth!
I don't listen to him or for that matter espn, and not much of anything pertaining to their talking heads, BUT
he and espn are far from stupid, they've got ya'll doing just what they want!
You listen, read and take in everything they have to say, which in turn increases their popularity and puts money in their pocket's!
Turn on SEC Network!
ROLL~TIDE!!!
I think both those plays were close. He is not perfect, but who doesn't have some bias who played the game? The best ones fight it, and he does it pretty good. In a world of Kannells and Galloways he is still far preferable.
The problem with Kirk's comment in regards to the intentional grounding is that it does not matter where the ball goes out of bounds. All that matters is where the ball lands. Kirk should know the rules of the game as the lead college football analyst in America..One person that disappointed me watching the game was Kirk Herbstreit. Kirk has always been pretty good about not showing a bias, but, he really got on my nerves at times during the game..Especially on the TD catch by Ridley when Kirk kept saying it looked like the ball was moving as he went out of bounds, when the replay showed, without doubt Calvin had firm control of the ball as he went out of bounds..
And the one play when Coker threw the ball out of bounds & Kirk wouldn't shut up about if the ball made it back to the LOS..I've always have enjoyed listening to Kirk when he calls our game, but, he dang sure was coming off as a Big 10 Homer to me & he just absolutely got on my last nerve this time listening to him..
He said it around 12:00 last night cst on ESPN. It was the Scott van pelt show. When did Tebow say that , do you recall which program. I would to see that.
Totally agree with you there. If Kannell is on I'm watching. I usually just catch him when I'm channel surfing. It's like watching a train wreck, you just know he's going to say something outlandish. I don't think he's trolling; he really believes what he's saying and thinks it's well thought out. And he's not stupid, he's just a homer and like most college football fans is tired of watching Alabama be so good EVERY year.
Kannell and Galloway both really hurt ESPN's credibility.
Herbstreit is as good as it gets. In watching the Mich St/tOSU game I was amazed how unbiased Kirk was watching the team he QB'd toss their season down the drain. However, I understand why some of our fans took exception to his work tonight.
The first thing I learned when I started officiating is very few announcers know the rules. That's where I got most of my rule knowledge so I had to unlearn quite a bit. They make official's jobs difficult because they spread so much incorrect information that people take as fact. Herbstreit is a good announcer but he is known by officials as someone who often gets rules wrong. The problem with Kirk's comment in regards to the intentional grounding is that it does not matter where the ball goes out of bounds. All that matters is where the ball lands. Kirk should know the rules of the game as the lead college football analyst in America..
For those who know the rule book, I can appreciate why they might be irritated by Kirk going on and on about the ball not crossing the line of scrimmage. Per the rule book:But as far as I could see, the ball DID NOT make it back to the LOS. He does have an obligation to report the FACTS. When Coker first threw it I couldn't tell - but turn it around.........Fowler thought that Cook should have been called for intentional grounding on that one where there was no receiver in the same zip code as the desperation heave....and so did Kirk.
I didn't find him to be biased at all.
Ah, so what I saw was right. Clearly landed beyond the LOS extended. For those who know the rule book, I can appreciate why they might be irritated by Kirk going on and on about the ball not crossing the line of scrimmage. Per the rule book:
"[Exception: If the passer is or has been outside the tackle box he may throw the ball so that it crosses or lands beyond the neutral zone or neutral zone extended (Rule 2-19-3).]"
In this case, the LOS extends beyond the sideline and the ball clearly landed beyond the LOS so no penalty.
The rule makes sense because it is consistent with a receiver's ability to reach beyond the sideline or end line to make a catch -- the ball doesn't immediately become dead when crossing a boundary line and before being caught by a receiver.Ah, so what I saw was right. Clearly landed beyond the LOS extended.
Kinda like the free throw line extended. Thanks 86!

Yep, it makes perfect sense. Maybe Kirk didn't know the rule in full. The rule makes sense because it is consistent with a receiver's ability to reach beyond the sideline or end line to make a catch -- the ball doesn't immediately become dead when crossing a boundary line and before being caught by a receiver.

With all due respect, I suggest you reread the post i replied to. The original poster said sometimes herbstreit got on his nerves with some comments. I agreed to that post which is my right and my opinion. No where and i mean no where did i say Herbstreit should sing our praises or hold us to "a mighty fortress is our God" Herbstreit is a great analyst and sometimes things will be said that come across differently. This shouldnt upset you this much. After all , I am sure you have seen and taken things differently than someone else, have you not? I dont expect any analyst to worship us but I am entitled to say something like " I picked up on that as well" when replying to a poster without being labeled as promoting sacrilege correct? With the all due respect: the call should have been grounding and Ridley's extraordinary catch could have been called either way.
One reason folks like Kannell exist is that whenever the commentary dips below the praise level of "A Mighty Fortress is Our God," college football fans, including ours, scream sacrilege.
Kannell is one thing. But Herbstreit?
