Duron can pay his way next year, but if he paid this year, he'd be considered an invited walk-on which means he would count to the 85 if he played.I still don't understand the reason he would have waited so long to give it to Woodson. Seems like it would have been better to have him at fall camp if there was a scholarship to offer. Maybe someone can explain if there is a difference for Walk-on scholarships if there is one. Personally, I don't know why D. Carter would need a scholarship for school. His dad has more than enough to pay the bill, so I never really understood why it would have been an either or situation.
You mean to tell me "Big, bad" Saban kept his word and didn't grayshirt? No, way. Good for coach and glad that was public for the naysayers to see/hear.Saban said he would have liked to have awarded a scholarship to one of "a couple good walk-ons." He mentioned defensive back Will Lowery specifically.
"But I felt like my word was important to keep with Danny Woodson and his family, so we decided to bring him in."
Thanks, that makes sense. What if a recruit has good academics and is offered this or another type of scholarship? Would this have an effect on the 85 limit?Duron can pay his way next year, but if he paid this year, he'd be considered an invited walk-on which means he would count to the 85 if he played.
so now sabans a bad guy for NOT greyshirting a player? aubs suck, I'm ready for the kidney punch of a season they should be in for this year. There was a thread on aufamily ragging Saban about lying to another football player(woodson) about a scholly. The boogs say the same ol' stuff, Saban lied to them, screwed another kid out of an opportunity and then Woodson's on the team. It sure was nice to tell them they spoke too soon and with their 54 freshman or redshirt freshman, they may have some number problems of their own in a couple of years.
Thx for the link or quote.I did not hear it with my own ears but here is a direct quote from twitter via Izzy:

Nick Saban: Would have loved to rewarded walk-ons such as Will Lowery. I felt like my word was important to keep to Woodson Jr."
If the school they play for recruited them than any form of institutional aid counts and they would be a counter against the 85.Thanks, that makes sense. What if a recruit has good academics and is offered this or another type of scholarship? Would this have an effect on the 85 limit?
but only if they play. but that may only count towards walk ons? though i thought that was what wesley neighbors did since he was on bryant scholarship. If the school they play for recruited them than any form of institutional aid counts and they would be a counter against the 85.
Correct they have to play. But the Bryant Scholarship does not count. Atleast from what I have read.but only if they play. but that may only count towards walk ons? though i thought that was what wesley neighbors did since he was on bryant scholarship.
Bama did not lose a player.Good to hear about Danny W. I don't know all the scholarship rules, but I hope this doesn't mean that we lost a player. Anyone know for sure?
you know what the great thing is about not being on staff. YOU DONT HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THIS STUFF. Just best to let Saban do his thing and figure he'll get the job done right. What I don't understand is why this scholarship is just now becoming available? If two scholarships were available, one for Woodson and one for Carter, then why didn't Woodson get his scholarship prior to the start of Fall camp? If he was in line ahead of Lowery, and two were available, then why wait? And don't try to tell me that the staff just now realized that the extra scholarship was there! Not this staff!
