Why the heck wouldn't Cutcliffe leave Duke for freaking UT??? I hate UT as much as anyone, but man, he'd stay at Duke if it's not over quickly enough for him? Stupid, stupid move if true.
duke has opened up their wallet and done a lot of things for Cutcliffe to help bring in talent. Granted, it's not SEC talent, but they are doing what they can to help him suceed. They're allowing him to 'build' the duke program, and that says a lot. Maybe he enjoys there. Maybe not.

I still don't see what's wrong with waiting until after NSD, possibly Spring or Summer, to make sure you get 'the guy', and not a band-aid just so you can save a recruiting class. And you can't even guarantee that.
Just a couple of quick thoughts on this.

If we wait until spring or summer you have killed the 10 class. Typing 10 class just looks funny :)

If we lose the 2010 class, how long would it take to recover from that?

If the 2010 class is lost and then we don't start recruiting for the 2011 class until March or later...we will be even further behind. We've already lost the 2011 recruit we had.

So, I think if he throw away the 2010 class and wait...we are also losing quiet a bit of ground for 2011 and the beginning parts of the 2012 class. We would lose out on one class totally and partially on 2 other classes.

I know college football is not totally about recruiting, but without doing it and doing it at least reasonably well teams have no shot to win.

If Hamilton is not fired after this I think he will be on the hot seat...if there is a such thing for ADs. He has to try and get the ship back on course ASAP. If the game attendance goes down much more I don't think he lasts much longer.

Ultimately, it is all about the money and wins = money

I heard it's a staff issue. He wants to bring all his and some of the various PTB factions at UT don't think he has any recruiters...

If that's the case, then I understand completely. I hate that the college PTB's now feel it necessary to tell coaches who to pick on their staff, how to run things, etc. Cutcliffe is an excellent X's and O's guy IMO, and with the right talent I think he can be very successful. People can say that Nutt has been more successful at OM than Cut, but Nutt had a loaded roster from Orgeron. I honestly think that Cutcliffe is a better overall coach than Houston Nutt is. It would probably be a solid hire for UT. Seems it's not gonna happen though.

Thats what I said earlier...no good coach is going to want someone else's staff, particularly Kiffin's. Heck, even Kiffin didn't take them with him.
What does that tell you?

Breaking news....

Dennis Franchione and Phillip Fulmer have both said they are not interested in the UT coaching position :)

Just kidding....I hope :)

And by saying I hope, I mean I hope they are not actually in the mix
In my first post I mentioned Derek Dooley and Randy Edsal. Both would be solid hires and bring a better face to UT football.

Forgot to mention Jack Del Rio has no interest in the UT job or the Alabama job.

"Good morning Americans....... it's Friday!"

So, after all the smoke from yesterday, it looks like Cutcliffe might just fall by the way side too.
Heck, if the PTB won't let him do as he pleases with his staff then I think if I were him I would stay at Duke. No need for him to jump into a fire at TN when he is getting this kind of welcome. He might just be reading the signs and feel he is better off where he is, raise or no raise.

Stay put Cut!

Some coaches simply cannot be trusted with staffing decisions. They are too short sighted or loyal (or "whatever"). Those coaches should not be head coaches at big programs. If you have to be told that recruiting ability has to be stressed in your staff choices, you are not the right man for the job at TN...

However, OTOH, if you get the RIGHT guy he can pick up the pieces and have the program back on track to 2011. Hire the wrong guy, and you fire him in 3 years and find yourself in a far deeper hole than you are in right now.

Things look bleak nowat UT for sure, but try putting your program back on track after, hiring and firing Mike Price, Dennis Franchione, and Mike Shula when there is no Nick Saban out there to hire.

The 2010 class is toast, take your time and get it right or you will be doing it all again 3 years from now.

Agree you do have to sacrifice this recruiting class to make sure you hire the best HC available.
