DeBoer Gets Contract Extension and Raise

Well, we're stuck. He'd better start producing some championships and none of this 9-10 win season stuff. Goodness, no more ice cream and music at practice, please.

This is what I saw on the buyout:

February 1, 2027: $67.5 million
February 1, 2028: $56.25 million
February 1, 2029: $45 million
February 1, 2030: $33.75 million
February 1, 2031: $22.5 million
February 1, 2032: $11.25 million

I think ALL of us would be thrilled with a two millions dollar raise.

You can like it. You can hate it.

Absent a total wheels-off Chizik / Freeze breakdown or an off-field blunder of major proportions (neither of which is likely) DeBoer is going nowhere.

The talking heads can bash. The ink-stained wretches (looking at you, Goodman) can type away. The callers can yammer. Posters can demand the second coming of Bryant or Saban.

Unless there's a massive meltdown (and consecutive 8-4s doesn't qualify), Kalen DeBoer will be in Tuscaloosa until at least 2031.

For those who wish otherwise, I ask my time-worn question: If you want to fire the current guy, who would you get who (1) represents such a significant and immediate upgrade that he warrants DeBoer's buyout, and (2) will realistically come.

Yeah, I'd prefer Kirby. I'd also prefer Ryan Day. Neither are coming. Dan Lanning is the only one I can think of who might, maybe, remotely qualify. And the word is he's already turned us down. Plus, at least until Phil Knight dies (and maybe longer, depending on Knight's heirs' priorities), Oregon has essentially bottomless pockets.

So if not DeBoer, who not named Anybody warrants a $50 million buyout and will come?

Exactly, we are no longer in an age of college football that it is realistic to think we can win a championship every other year or every third year. Heck, it was not realistic when Saban was coaching, yet he did it. Which is a credit to how extraordinary he was. As long as we are competing, and can grab a championship occasionally, that is a more realistic expectation these days for me. IMHO. Saban has spoiled me but I have returned quickly to reality and more reasonable expectations.

I don’t think it is a circumstance of most of the responders wanting DeBoer replaced currently. I think the reaction, mine included, is one of this being “too much, too soon”. Is there really anything in the first two years of CKD’s tenure that says “we better lock him in long term. He’s about to turn the corner here and folks will come knocking”? IMO not really. Do I want him to have success? Without question. Did I want him gone at the end of last year? Nope. By the same token, I’m not yet convinced in Year Three we’ll see substantial improvement. I do like the fact that he did recognize issues over his first two years and was committed to making changes. And I hope he proves Byrne’s decision as being the correct one. However, I simply don’t see anything he has done in his first two years to warrant a $2 million raise,, contract extension and increased buyout at this time.

An extension doesn't always mean a long term commitment to a coach. Jimbo Fisher got a contract extension at TAMU and 2 years later he was fired. Quite a few coaches get extensions and then get fired. If we'd miss the playoff the next two seasons I think the pressure on the AD would be too intense.

It used to be said that signing a coach to an extension was largely about recruiting, especially late in CNS's tenure at Bama.

We heard all kinds of "rumors" that Penn State targeted CKD. I personally never thought that would happen, but the talk was real and I'm sure every one of our rivals would have welcomed him walking away! The collective anti-Bama nation would have rejoiced and laughed!

But I do know that on Saturday we are expecting the signature of another top QB and I know we are hoping for Sales to "come home." Kirby could be whispering in Haven's ear about rumors of CKD being on "the hot seat."

TBC, I don't think this extension is totally about recruiting, but I do think it still plays a part in these things. Plus, you lose a coach these days and your whole team can hit the portal. All the assistants are gone, too, most likely. It's the kind of disruption that easily sets a program back at least a couple of years. When we saw CNS willingly stepping away, it hit us hard, and even though we hated it, it was a pretty smooth transition. Most coaching changes aren't!!!

In today's era of the portal and NIL stability is more important than ever. Plus, you have evidence now after two years, that CKD is showing he knows some of the steps to bring the program back closer to the Bama Standard.

And I'll echo a couple of earlier posts and also say, what coach is out there who would clearly be an upgrade that you were certain you could get???

For me personally. I'm a CKD fan and I really, really am rooting for his personal success, which means Bama football succeeds too!!!

I'm not a fan of DeBoer. I don't think he is a good fit for Bama or the SEC. I don't think he wins a single championship at Bama.

It will not take multiple 8-4 seasons for him to get fired. All it takes is for donors to stop giving. I think we are closer to that than many want to admit.

I think things will start getting very uncomfortable if ...

Yet again loses an ugly game to a bad team. Kentucky has me very nervous. This is the type of game he has lost at least once in each of his first 2 years at Bama.

The team continues to look bad on the road, especially in the first half.

If he continues to play mediocre, poor teams close instead of dominating and putting them away. He and his staff seem to have at least a game or 2 each year where it feels like they forget how to coach and look lost. I'm so tired of this one.

I know, I'm one of the whiners. I was never convinced he was the right hire, and I have not seen a single thing in 2 years to change my mind. I have seen several things that make me wish Bama had hired someone else.

The final record is not all that matters. Holding on to a coach because you are scared about who might be hired next is not always the right move. In his first 2 years, DeBoer's teams have looked poorly coached and underprepared in more games than I like to count. That should scare us all.

This is a head scratching move for me for sure. Overall, Deboer's just been average, meh. Which of course doesn't cut it at Alabama. To me, coaching has been minimized somewhat in this NIL/portal era. Which is why I thought schools were moving away from these huge buyout contracts. But here we are giving Deboer one when he really hasn't earned it? He and Sexton must have convinced Byrne he really almost went to Penn St. or Michigan.

For those saying who would you get as an alternative, Indiana went and plucked Cignetti from James Madison and look at them now. But he has proven to be a good program developer and builder, instilling toughness and emphasizing good fundamental play. They didn't do anything real flashy like Ty Simpson said. They were just consistent and always did the right things. I believe there are others out there like Cignetti.

My response is that Byrne is paid more than $2 m a year to decide who he should have as head coach. I don’t know who is better than CKD out there…BUT IF . I was paid $2 million a year. I would probably have some answers. Does CKD deserve another year….for sure….does he deserve a massive extension…NO!

I am not saying I want him fired. I would just like to have the option on the table if things go completely off the rails.

This extension was dumb at this time--unless the Penn State rumors were more substantial than we thought and this was all hammered out back then as way to keep him from leaving. And even then, I'm not sure it still isn't dumb.

I think your concerns are absolutely warranted and valid and I don’t think we should have given him an extension or raise yet either.

I do think there are at least some signs now that he is trying to make some adjustments and pivot and fix some of the issues we’ve had.

We won’t have any idea whether they will work or not at this point though and imo we really needed to see how this year unfolds before even thinking about a longer commitment.

Either way we were going to be stuck with the current situation for a few more years I suppose.

We will probably have a good idea of whether or not this was a bad move as we roll into November and December.

Here is the Buyout breakdown because I’ve seen some confusion.

It’s still nightmare fuel until 2032

Among those who would realistically come, who would you rather have?

Not agreeing with this extension has nothing to do with wanting him fired or not wanting him as the head coach. But rather, has everything to do with not getting ourselves into a worse financial and legal situation than we already were with his original contract, if things go south. With this new extension, how is the program in a better situation financially or "on the field" than under the original contract? Granted, I haven't read anything about the contract other than what has been disclosed publicly. But from what has been made public, the university has put itself in a less favorable position, both financially and functionally, if things go south and they want to part ways with DeBoer. All in the name of what? Are we on the verge of losing him to another program? Did he and his agent call Byrne and say he was unhappy and Byrne did this in a panic? I just don't understand the thinking in doing this at this time. We would already owe the guy buttloads of millions if we fired him after his first three years while giving him a relatively small buyout for another school if they really wanted him. We were already giving up a ton of financial leverage with the original contract. I'm just miffed at this move...
