finally, a voice of reason. many of us feel the same way, but, then there are those he makes reference to. i include cecil hurt and jess nicholas in that group. we are going to have success, and coach shula is going to get it for us with his recruiting, fairness, and pedigree.

Good Article by Dodd. We've got a good coach in Shula and we need to be patient as a fan base. I know everyone wants to win now, but it's not like we didn't know this was a rebuilding year and a very young team. IMO, we're a year or two away from being a consistent title contender every year again.

What's even scarier, is that he looks awefully familiar....

This one makes ya wonder what the Morriss household is like:
"Playing close is like showering with your sister," Morriss said last year after a 16-13 loss.

I will restate what I posted elsewhere on the board:

The National media seems to have a much different perspective than the State media has. I wonder why that is? (rhetorical)

Re: Dennis Dodd's take on the Bama Nation (He's right)

Dodd failed to mention that the main reason that this year was supposed to be a rebuilding year was due to the losses on the defensive side of the ball, where we lost seven starters. Pre-season speculation was that the offense returning starters would have to help the defense out. Thus far they haven't done that. Despite returning quite a few starters, the offense hasn't been able to perform consistently, while the defense continues to improve. I know all about scholarship losses but those should be spread over the team fairly evenly, but the offense struggles. In fact the OL has taken two players from the defense and yet the defense continues to outperform the offense.

Sure the loss of Prothro hurts, but unless he were taking direct snaps and running with the ball, Prothro wouldn't help the running game too much. The OL has been inconsistent at best for four years. We were returning starters on the OL, got one major upgrade on the OL. I wonder if Prothro could line up at Right Tackle.

I would submit to Dodd that conservative play calling cost us the Arkansas game which could have given the team much needed confidence and momentum. Same thing goes for the TN game. So fans are upset because, even though we are right where everyone predicted, we know we could be in a better position. Fans are also upset because there is little visible evidence that the offense is improving and no changes seem to be contemplated. Therefore, it looks like we will keep losing games that we have good opportunities to win.

Re: Dennis Dodd's take on the Bama Nation (He's right)

While I don’t disagree that patience should be shown regarding coach Shula, (I knew there would be a learning curve with him, he was not a head coach when Alabama hired him). I am cautious to take the advice of DD, because his opinion of Alabama football is clear from his past articles. He thinks, as many of his colleagues in sports journalism do, that the time for Bama football is past. Now that Coach Bryant is gone Alabama should be glad to be what it should have been all along, a mediocre team from a back woods state.

As an Alabama fan I will never accept mediocrity, I want the team to compete for a championship every year, just like it says on all the plaques in front of BDS. I will not be happy until Alabama is returned to its rightful place at the top of the college football world along with Ohio State, USC and others. I am still unsure if Mike Shula is the person that can take us to that place, I hope he is.

How much patience though? When are we to expect results? Somebody give me a year. 07, 08, 09?

Depends on who you ask, for some fans, three years ago, for others, take whatever the current year is and add three more, and for most, probably some noticeable improvement in 07 and contending in 08.

99.9 % of the time, Dennis Dodd qualifies under the American with Disabilities Act due to his moronic and idiotic state of mind. I almost always disagree with him, but... even a blind squirrel can find a nut from time to time. Dodd hit the nail on the head.... I wonder if a seeing-eye dog helped point him in the right direction!

Patience is a virtue. In retrospect most universities have moved too quickly to go in another direction and thus cause their programs even more problems. The solution to problems isn't always change at the top. I said at the beginning that Shula should be given five years. I am almost apt to propose a change with a couple of assistant coaches, but then I think back to that first year and Joe Kines struggles. He ended up being the diamond in the rough (the best of all the assistants IMHO)!

Re: Dennis Dodd's take on the Bama Nation (He's right)

I'm going to do this, not because I'm a gloom and doomer; but because I can't stand Dennis Dodd.

1) He starts his article off knocking the Bama Nation.
Mike Shula is under pressure. We here at Weekend Watch List are surprised it took this long.
2)
Believe us 'Bama Nation, you do not want to return to the bad, old days of wild-eyed indiscretion. Remember when Mike DuBose was gettin' jiggy with the help?
I don't think there is a Bama fan alive who wants to return to the DuBose era. Perhaps Dodd's memory only goes back to 1997; but Alabama was a national title contender from '91-'96, and also basically from 1960-1981 and for several periods before that even. I would be willing to bet my house that's where Bama Nation would like to return. To even insinuate that Bama fans want to return to the DuBose era is retarded.
3)
It demands 10 wins (at least) every season. Unreasonable? Impossible. Word apparently hasn't reached 'Bama that the SEC champion could have two losses this year.
A sure sign of Dodd's intellectual ineptitude. Does it take a statistics major to figure out that any SEC team with 2 losses this season would have TEN wins? Everyone is playing a 12 game schedule this year. I understand the point he's trying to make; but this guy doesn't think through anything he writes.
4)
The message, once again for Big Bad Voodoo 'Bama Nation, is: Back off. If coaches aren't fleeing your cloying arms, then you're running them off.
Again, there's that national knock on Bama fans for running off coaches. And those coaches would be????? Take Curry out of the equation (whether he fled or was run off is debatable) and who have you got that "Bama Nation" has run off????

Sorry for the length and the rant. His overall message is spot on. However, that guy NEVER has anything good to say about Bama without at least throwing in a few digs. To me, he's on par with Finebaum. And if he writes something that's positive or right on about Alabama, it's purely coincidental.
