What I find very amusing here is, after 26 posts the thread was 'closed' so it didn't bring overdue attention to one players 'issues'.

Fast forward to 2024....we got '100' threads open on one players 'issues' and its not really a big deal, so to speak. Times certainly have changed!!!!
I think that in 2004, college football players were amateur student-athletes and today they are professional football players. There is a lot more room for criticism of players today.

It only took Andy Dufresne around 20 years to escape. (Boy did my head spin around like the kid in “The Exorcist” when I saw the date on the OP).

I hear his wife doesn't like Tuscaloosa.
There was an interesting story about the Rich/Rita/Finebaum saga in the Tuscaloosa News many years back. The story was recounted by now NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Ian was a young reporter covering Alabama at the time. Rapoport actually broke the story.

Ian said that Rita had nothing to do with Rich Rod deciding to back out. She was actually in Morgantown packing up for the move to Tuscaloosa. The biggest mistake Alabama made was not getting agreement in place (and signed) or a signed “letter of understanding” before the story broke. It gave time for West Virginia boosters to get to Rich Rod., work a new deal and get him to stay. Rapoport was in Morgantown to cover Rodriguez departure and then follow him Tuscaloosa for his official announcement. He said he was “standing outside the athletic complex where Rodriguez was meeting with his team. Suddenly a cheer goes up and players come running out saying “he’s staying….he’s staying!”. At that point, I felt sick and thought my career was over.”

As to the “Finebaum stuff”, Rapoport said it wasn’t Finebaum comments Rita heard. It was another sports talk show host making fun of her and message board comments she read that upset her. But she was 100% still ready to make the move. It was Rich Rodriguez’s decision not to take the job.

Not many months ago, while coaching at Jacksonville, Rodriguez was asked about it again. He basically said very much the same as Rapoport

Another important element to the story, possibly the most important, is that RR said he did not sense that he was “the guy” that Alabama really wanted when talking with MM. I’ve often wondered if that was intentional by Coach Moore or subconscious, since he was the one who wanted to wait for Saban but other PTB got jumpy and wanted to “get someone”.

Another reason to be appreciative of Coach Moore, who IMO, was one of the primary reasons that CNS stayed at Alabama long-term (though IMO, his Gypsy, mercenary tendencies were always overstated. I followed his career from MSU forward.) and became a different, more giving man. Mal and Blake Sims were similar in that they were unusually unselfish persons and loved Alabama. Mal had a profound effect on Coach Saban.

My brother attended a fund raiser that Brody held for the Big Oak Ranch. He said he was recently in Auburn and saw a bumper sticker that said: "Honk if you sacked Brody."

He laughed about it and said: "Good Lord. They still have bumper stickers about that game. That was 20 years ago!"
