Re: Clay Travis Says We Are In Potential Trouble

I'm really late to this party, but I'm not sure I "get" the attacking from rivals. I'm not sure I understand the problem. Is it memorabilia displayed that's the big deal or the pictures of our players on facebook? I know the cease and desist was sent in Dec. Does the facebook page still have our players on it? As a university is Alabama responsible for monitoring that?

Clay's angle is that players may have received impermissible benefits.

I just don't see that is any different than all the signed jerseys, helmets, etc all over any college town.
It's not. You'll see it everywhere. You even see signed UNA memorabilia here in Florence. It's part of the "college town" experience, whether big or small. It's all part of it. It would be impossible to police, and I don't think the NCAA is going to waste their time with it unless the player got paid or compensated in some way for his autographs.

Re: Clay Travis Says We Are In Potential Trouble

Clay’s angle is that he is a UT homer and ran with Barner message board banter to create this riveting 3 paragraph investigative piece (and by investigate, I mean he copied and pasted from his inbox full of Barner hate mail).
I only said it that way to attribute it to him specifically rather than lend it credence on its own.
The point is that "impermissible benefits" is what would be the most damaging infraction, and what rivals are pinning their hopes on.

Its amazing that Clay missed all the "NCAA violations" occuring every day in the lobby of the hotel at Media Days. How many of those autographs went on ebay 30 minutes later? SEC and NCAA didnt seem to care.

Clay can't accept that a player might sign some memorabilia without wanting money, he thinks he has a story that will catapult him into big time reporting.

The only thing that makes this any kind of story is the pictures are of autographs at a store. If it was just at a game or media days like you mention, it wouldn't matter. For all Clay Travis knows, one person could have gotten Trent to autograph 30 items on Friday and sold every item.

Done.

I will happily read the responses that you have received from at least 2 mods, telling you in so many words not to worry, and I will go stick my fingers in my ears saying "La la la, I can't hear you". I trust their judgment, and considering the source (them), versus Clay Travis, I can wash the sand out of my hair and ears later, feeling just fine.
That guy is a total jerk bamahippie. Everything he posts is over the top negative and uneccesary. He's obviously connected to Travis and Sports By Brooks.

I don't think he's connected to anyone. He'll tell you real quick, he's been here a long time if you have a relatively low post count. I've had a couple of "back and forths" with him on other threads. I think he's just really stubborn...

THIS ^^^

He's too lazy to do the work, just gloms off of everyone else's reporting or the emails of mentally ill Barners, but he thinks he's really fallen into a big story here. Idiot.

Re: Clay Travis Says We Are In Potential Trouble

I am not going to worry about this since the UA compliance department has already investigated this matter and no NCAA violations or player eligibility issues were found. Also last December UA Compliance director Mike Ward sent a cease and desist letter to the store owner. That should have been the end of the story. But now the barners and opponent bloggers have put the story back out into the Interwebs and into the light of the so called real media and it is off again. Tide Fans set the reflash watch. ;)

I wish boosters like this T-Town guy would stay away from the kids, period. He has no business hanging out with the football team. Go to games, support your program, but stay away from the players.

Just my opinion.

I agree. The biggest issue our fan base has is that for some reason alot of Alabama fans feel like they have to send responses to these idiots like Clay Travis, which really just makes the situation worse, because that is what he wants. The media in this state has been doing the same thing for years by spinning their stories to create backlash from Alabama fans, which drives caller traffic and internet hits. Media from outside the state have caught on as well, and they are now jumping into the fray. It will likely never end, because as long as Auburn is around to fan the flames, it will continue to happen.

If that interpretation is incorrect--that an athlete's autograph can be used with the athlete's knowledge and the athlete not be ineligible unless he had received a benefit--then I feel much better about the situation.
That's not the whole story. The athlete is under an obligation to exercise due diligence in seeing that it ceases, when he becomes aware (or the school can be proactive on his part). Remember my example of a mall signing. All those signing would be ineligible under Travis' interpretation. In fact, there just wouldn't be any mall signings. Many of those items are autographed to be sold and everyone knows it...
