Do You Think CMA Will End Up At SMU?

Now that SMU has fired their head coach, CMA is being mentioned as a possible candidate for the job.

Do you think he would take it? Or would he wait until Mack Brown steps down at Texas? Or would he wait until Nick Saban steps down?

Don't know if he would be offered or if he would go, but I think he needs some more experience before he becomes a head. It would be like bringing up a star in AA ball to the MLB and him not be so great, could ruin his confidence. I would hate to see that happen to Major.

They may offer, but he'll stay here at least a little while longer. If he continues to have success he'll receive better offers and will probably leave at some point.

I like to see those "in the know" squash these rumors quickly. CMA would benefit from staying for a few more years, padding his resume, and going to a good school. SMU is a graveyard for coaches.

Nope. That place is as much a coaching graveyard as any in the country. You only go there as a has been rarely as an up and comer.

If Major Applewhite were to be considered for the HC job at Bama it would probably help his resume if he did leave and HC at another program and have success there.

I think Coker would accept an offer. Christensen should hold out for a better opportunity form the Big - 12. For Johnson it would be a step back and if he wants to leave the USN he could do better than the ponies. Would be surprised if Mason or little round man would jump at an offer. As far as our CMA, not sure he'd want to go to such a program that would be so difficult to re-build and be forgotten in 3 or 4 years. Both he and Christensen can build stock at their current positions with less an opportunity to fail. JMHO

SMU considering CMA along with other names is not a rumor.

Ever since the Death Penalty, SMU has put a strong de-emphasis on the football program. A coach going there is going to be handcuffed, even though he's in the heart of a fertile recruiting base, and that is why a young coach looking to make his mark will not start at SMU. The administration of that school doesn't want it to ever get big again.

If SMU wanted to do so, they could easily dominate Conference USA. Even after all the big schools in Texas get their players, there would be enough for SMU to make some serious noise in that conference.

Yes. SMU would most likely hurt his career while developing a great offense at Bama would help a lot more.

I am inclined to say no too. Isn't it true that he could have been the HC of Rice if he wanted it? Wouldn't Rice have been a better place than SMU?

That being said, I couldn't blame him if he took it if he was offered and I would be rooting for him to do well there.

Since he grew up an Alabama fan & truly wanted to play at Alabama worse than Texas - I think he's so happy to be at Alabama now - I feel he's thinking ahead to maybe stepping up when CNS retires years down the road...I soooooo could be wrong, but... The only thing I think that would actualy take him away if if the relationship between he & CNS is not good, & then maybe money & getting away may speak loudly to him.

It would be a difficult decision for an up-and-coming assistant coach to know when to jump at an opportunity and when to be patient.

On the one hand, if you jump at the first opportunity that comes around, you may be jumping into your own coaching coffin (see Chizik at Iowa State?).

On the other, if you're too picky and too patient, you may start to get the tag of being a "lifer" as an assistant. Jimbo Fisher, for instance, may be in a little danger of this if another couple cycles pass him by ... which perhaps is one reason he was interested in the head coaching gig at, of all places, UAB.

Seems to me Major has plenty of time and ought to stay put a while. If he brings an elite offense to Bama, he'll have no shortage of opportunities.
