Is it possible that Smith may have improved his speed since he has been at Alabama?
I don't think that you can improve your 40 time much while playing a sport like football at a school like Alabama. Some, sure, but not enough to move the needle.

I maybe thinking of the wrong player but wasn't it Jerry Rice who was considered "slow" for a WR when he came out of Miss Valley St? Yet when he got in a game, caught a pass and took off up field you rarely saw anyone catching him from the behind. I think I remember hearing this on his documentary "A Football Life" on the NFL Network.

Makes sense. I imagine most guys at big time college programs and the NFL are around 4.5, but corners play in space most of the time and, as I understand it, it's more about being able to turn your hips and have quick burst.

Nothing makes up for speed to burn, but very few plays in football is about who can run the outright fastest.
The fly pattern is. In fact, nothing exposes a slow corner quicker than a fast WR running that route...

I wonder was he wearing pads and a helmet when he ran that. Of course not and I understand that it is telling but I have always wondered if some lose less speed than others when putting on the pads?

Since I have never played a down of tackle football with pads, I will defer to the judgement of the more knowledgeable folks on here.

Could be part of it. I also know that some players tense up more in games than they do in practice. Relaxed muscles perform better. There are players who have the ability to be just as relaxed in a game as they are in practice and never lose a step. Whereas others tense up and aren't able to run as fast, think as quick etc during games. You hear people around the sport of football refer to it as "game speed". This applies to a player who may not wow you in the 40 but during a game no one is running him down. He's pulling away from players who have faster 40 times than him. Crazy stuff.

I don't know if he was considered slow or not but I do know that there is a myth out there that he ran some absurdly slow 40.

That is slow for sure, and a little shocking given the other numbers. Having an equal shuttle and better vertical would seem to imply better explosive strength and speed. Even with the bigger frame I wouldn't have thought he speed drop off from Averett to be that big. Wonder if he just had a bad 40 run at the opening?
Remember, he also has approximately 2 inches of height on Averett and his arms are supposedly very long. That could be there difference, it may not be in his legs.

Saivion's times are very strange. I guess I just assumed he was fast since he was so highly regarded coming out of IMG and then JUCO.

From LSU's SBNation site:
I did also. When you hear 5* you don't think 4.7 as a CB. From Saban's presser yesterday, Smith and Thompson have not wrapped up starting roles so it will be interesting to see how our secondary looks when we take the field against Louisville. I would be shocked if Deointe is not a starter.

I`m more than a little amused concerning this deep deliberation in which we are ( myself included ) so studiously engaged regarding the necessary speed that a successful cornerback should possess.:D . I`m pretty sure that the staff feels that those we`re discussing have the necessary skills and attributes to play. That would include foot speed. I really do enjoy this board !! By the way, I`m not being sarcastic! I really do!
