You said something nice about Verne and Gary.

Quick! Duck!

I agree, by the way. They're not perfect, but I like them better than any ESPN combo except Nessler and Blackledge.

Lord how I miss Gottfried and Franklin.
Prof, I have a whole 'nother spiel worked up on Lundquist and Musburger, but since you said this ('Duck!'). I am going to spare you and those for whom you are concerned. It will have to wait for a later day when I am more moved by the muses, or rather by the steam coming out my ears.

Oh come on people! Just because they brag on UA now that we're on top does not mean that Verne and Gary are all-of-a-sudden competent announcers.

Wasn't it just a few short months ago that we were bashing them at every turn, hoping and praying that we didn't have these two bozos calling the game? Yes, we did, and they're still incompetent.

It's gotten so bad at my house that Gary Danielson (a.k.a. Captain Obvious) is becoming a household item. Now, whenever someone states the obvious or says something asinine, the entire family turns and says "Nice one, Gary."

Insight, really? I can't stand commentators that say after a great play, "I would have called that exact play in that situation." Or after a poor play they opine, "No no no, what a terrible play call!" Ladies and gentlemen, that's not commentating, that's annoying.

The only reason you guys hated him before was because of his constant praise of Tebow and your hatred of UF during that period. Guys, they do that for the #1 team every year. GD has always provided the most insightful commentary of any college football analyst on TV. He's not changed his analysis at all, but it's UA that's on top now. That's why you think Danielson's great now. Is it that hard to see?
Maybe it is that hard to see, but I don’t think so. ;)

I do think they have grown on us in that they have called more of our games. The fact that we are "on top" gives us the opportunity to listen to them call games more often.

I didn’t like them that much (and still am not enamored) because of Verne's constant mistakes, Gary’s seeming insistence on finding faults. It also bugged me when it seemed that they had to bring up Ingram’s father and Tebow in every game.

I think Gary's insight (or at least observation) is undeniable and some of the mistakes have gone away with their familiarity with our team. Some of it hasn’t.

GD is great to listen to. He understands the game, has done his homework, and often predicts things that happen. I love listening to him.

Verne is terrible. All he does is repeat the same stories that we have all heard. I still remember during last years SEC Champ game. He said GMac did a Baryshnikov along the sidelines. My skin crawls everytime I think of that.

I think it was umeyer's first year when fl traveled to Bama and fl was down at the half. gd may have said that it was the same score last week when fl was at ky. lundquist promptly said yeah but this aint kentucky or something to that effect.
It was after Prothro's 87 yard td reception to open the game after Florida went 3 and out.

"There are few certain truths in an uncertain world, but this one is: This ain't Kentucky."
Wasn't Blackledge working that game with Verne? I don't think Gary had started yet.

I wish someone in our SID would tell them Demarcus's last name is not pronounced Mill-i-ner. It's Mill-ner. The "i" is silent.

I too miss Gottfried and Franklin....they were really great together!:biggrin2:
Preach on, Brother! I saw Franklin doing a game earlier this season, and he's still a great P-B-P man.

And for those who worry about VD mispronouncing names, WHEN is someone going to tell Eli that "Moore" is pronounced "More", not "Moour".

I'm gonna disagree...lol..

I know he misses names occassionally but he might be the absolute best at doing what a great play by play guy is supposed to do, which is adding excitement to the game.

His "OH MY" and OH MAN" etc.....get me pumped.

I can't stand those play by play announcers who act like they're announcing a funeral.

The game is supposed to be fun to watch and Verne is very good at helping to make it that way.

Heck, if you think about it....even the missed names are more funny than aggravating.

Danielson is very very good as well.

I think they're a great team and compliment each other very well.
I agree with you Sip. Verne has his faults but he makes it exciting and fun to watch and Gary is the most knowledgeable analyst calling college football. I would not want anyone else calling our games.

That makes about as much sense as pronouncing Jordan Jur-den.

I agree. Although, Verne, did say something the other night that I did actually like during the Florida game. He said that Bryant/Denny is one of the most beautiful stadiums in college football, especially at night.

as a Jordan, I can attest that it was, at one time, pronounced that way. It was also spelled JoUrdan, but the "Jer-dan" enunciation was likely just the Scots-Irish turning into Appalachian. Likely wasn't really pronounced that way, but sure as shootin' sounded like it to someone who wasn't from the hill country.

My favorite of this season was one of Danielson's lines about Mallet.

"He has better footwork than Drew Brees."

Really, Even Lundquist didn't know what to say to that one. I remember a moment of awkward silence. I live in Florida or I would just listen to Eli.

On a side note. The area I live is heavily Gator fans, and they were very quiet Sunday morning at church.
Oh Yeah they were!!
Actualy I've had a couple of 'em turn and walk the other way on Monday when they saw me! It's been like that all week, at least so far. Guess they'll start thinking 'bout those kitty-cats coming in from LS?.......:cool2:

Yeah i do like them for the most part. Danielson is a lot better at explaining the game than Herbstreit is. He has a much better understanding of the x's and o's than Herbstreit does.

Truth. The owner of Oz Music in Tuscaloosa - my former boss - is named Jordan and pronounced Jer-dan.

Funny how everyone likes Verne and Gary. Two years ago the two could not even pronounce Julio's first name. Verne called him JEWLEEO. An others like Rolando McClain he called McCain. There were several others. Now that Alabama is winning and winning big these two have changed their tune when calling the games. The two put more effort into educating themselves on how to pronounce the players names and do a better job of calling the game. In the past that did not happen. :BigA:

As far as I'm concerned, Danielson is about as good as it gets. He obviously does his homework and always comes well prepared, he's very quick and very thorough in explaining the action on the field and nothing seems to escape him. He is very balanced in his praise and in his criticism. Too many Bama fans seem to hold it against him that he doesn't just constantly ooze praise for Bama, but folks, that's not his job. He knows what his job is and he does it extremely well.

Verne is OK if you allow yourself to just accept that he's apparently always gonna have trouble with names, but he comes up with some goodies too.
