Do any of you have an ill feelings toward Bro Oliver for leaving us & going to Auburn - If age wasn't a factor would you welcome him back

I would have a hard time embracing someone who left us for Auburn in this day and age. I would not have a problem with a coach with Auburn ties (don't we have one) just with one that would leave Bama to go to THE hated rival

Didn't Mal leave and go to Notre Dame for a while..?

I know Bro Oliver was well loved just wonder if all is forgiven

MODS: If you think this is pot stirring or cotroversial delete it, thanks

It's not unusual. It's been brought up numerous times. I'd have a hard time getting over some of the remarks he made while campaigning for the UA HC job, such as saying that he'd really wanted to go to AU instead of UA for college (a lie). That becomes a character issue, IMO. OTOH, the other gang of '61 guys have accepted him back into the fold...

I still like Brother Bill. He may have said some things he shouldn't have, but haven't we all said things we regret later on. I think he is a great guy and will always remember him for giving us the NC in '92.

It's not just that he went to Auburn, it's that he went to Auburn after engineering a failed attempt to oust Stallings. (To be fair, that came about in large part because Hootie Ingram made Oliver promises without consulting Stallings.)

I was surprised to read recently that CBO was @ AU some four years before he returned to Alabama and then left again after the HC job wasn't going to be his. Did I misread or can anyone else verify that? Thanks! Roll Tide!:BigA:

There are certian coaches Mickey Andrews comes to mind that for whatever reason never get the HC job - They excel at their respective coordinator positions but for some reason they can't score the HC gig - Maybe Bill Oliver was one of those - maybe not a good interview or something I dunno

I have a hard time with Oliver leaving us for All-Barn. I also have a problem with him trying to push Stallings out of the door, but I sure thank him for his contribution to the defensive gameplan against Miami in the '93 Sugar Bowl.

I would welcome Brother Bill back. I personally think he got sold a bill of goods that the powers that be at the UofA didn't come through on. I don't know what all he said but like someone else posted, we've all said things that we have regretted later and it was purely out of hurt or frustration. I think Brother Bill was verbally promissed the head coaching position once CGS retired and then was snubbed.

Having said all that, if I'm off the mark and someone knows more of the facts about this and can shed some light on the subject I'd welcome being corrected.

I can't say I didn't like the idea of Brother Bill and SOS coming to Bama rumor going around during the search. So I guess it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

there had to be something to that SOS rumor
Saw an article recently where SOS said he milked the "rumor" about him to Bama and SC gave him a raise. He did say that he would have loved to come to Bama, if the timing would have been right, when he left the skins.

Mickey Andrews was a HC before the FSU job. He was a HC at Livingston University and won a NC while there! Mickey has had offers at other schools but UA is the only one he wanted from what he said in the past. Mickey has turned Bama down to work as an assistant or DC before and that may be one of the reasons he was never interveiwed at UA for the HC job. I know Bowden tried to help Mickey get the HC job at Bama but I'm not sure if he ever interveiwed for it. Bill Oliver wanted Coach Stallings to secure the HC job for him but Gene said it was not his job to give. Coach Stallings was run off by the same people that caused Coach Fran to flee ie Randy Ross and others.

Exactly . Then , david nousel did the same thing to him at the barn .

Bear sent CBO to the barn as an ac under shug .

6-7 weeks ago on Finebaum , he even went so far as to say he would've crawled to T'town had the job been open 2 years earlier . Spurrier was very complimentary with his remarks concerning the UofA .

Bill Oliver = as good a college DC as ever came down the road;
The BEST college D-back coach that ever walked on the field.

When Hootie took over as AD, he already had Oliver hired, before Stallings ever got named as HC.
From the time Stalling's feet hit the ground, we all heard (if you didn't hear it I don't know how you missed it) about the deal Hootie had with Oliver and Stallings that - Oliver was to follow Stallings as HC at Bama.

Hootie took the fall.
Fans talk of backstabbing.
My question has always been;
who did the backstabbing and who got stabbed?

Most, at the time, said Oliver was trying to backstab Stallings.
I felt just the opposite!
At this point in time, I feel both got the knife from the "Powers That Be".

PTB (Board of Trustees and university presidents included) have been the problem with the athletic department ever since Bryant left.

Bryant brought in Perk,
many say he left for money;(wrong)
Perk took a pay cut to come to Bama.

PTB would not get behing Perk with anywhere near the facilities upgrades he wanted, everyone wanted a voice, too many hands in the pot, too many knives in the back.

PTB jilted Bowden at the alter and hired Curry. (I despise Bowden, but not making that hire was a BIG mistake)

PTB ran off Oliver and Stallings.

PTB had a son named Mike (it didn't work)

Fran was a good coach (not much of a man)
But the PTB never told him the truth.

PTB had a friend named Mike (it didn't work)

PTB had a grandson named Mike (it didn't work)

I can only hope the PTB are all finally on the same page,
holster their daggers,
and get out of the way.

Say what you will about Brother...he is undoubtedly one of the greatest defensive minds to ever grace the SEC...The game plan that he and Dumbose put together to stymie the Canes in the Sugar Bowl was awesome. The poor Miami suckers didn't have a clue what hit them. I still think a Evil Genius Brother Bill combo would have been a deadly combo
