i grew up poor in birmingham. never got to see a game in person at BDS. My first game was 2 yrs ago in the georgia dome against clemson. i hate clemson with a passion i cannot fully describe. so it was an absolutely fabulous trip to see bama utterly destroy clemson that evening.
im planning on making a pilgrimage to bds this yr or next. i might need to be hospitalized to wipe the permagrin off my face when im down there.

Legion Field, October 4, 1975, against Ole Miss. We beat them 32-6 that day, had a shutout until the Rebels scored very late (on or about the last play of the game). O happy day!

First Bama game I saw in person?

Can't remember the year but it was late 50s. I think Bobby Skelton was QB. I was about 12 yrs old and saw Bama beat GA Tech by 3 pts on a last minute FG by one of the Sington Brothers. Can't remember if it was Fred or Dave.
Can anybody help me out with what year and which Sington brother would have kicked the game winner?
Sure as heck wasn't a team coached by Ears...

So that would make it 1959...Coach Bryant's first team. Not sure on who kicked the FG though. We won 9-7.
Indeed, the year was 1959 at Legion Field. However, it was Coach Bryant's second year at the helm of the Tide.

My first Bama game in person was Sept 27, 1958, Mobile's Ladd Stadium vs LSU. Future Heisman winner (1959) Billy Cannon starred for the Bengal Tigers. A milestone game, as it was Coach Bryant's first game as Bama head coach. Surprisingly, Bama led 3-0 at half. En route to the National Championship, LSU prevailed with 13 second half points, while holding our Tide scoreless. Read recap at link below.

!985. Bama vs Cincinnatti

I was a Junior in HS and some buddies and I got free tickets from the university because of our interest in attending. It was a lot of fun even though it was a blowout. The stadium was just the lower level with the big press box on the (west side I think). It was the first long trip that my parents let me drive on with just other friends and I ended up locking the keys in the car and having to pay 50 bucks to a local locksmith so we could get back home.

Believe it was Dave who booted it, maybe. Next year in '60, Richard O'Dell kicked one to win it at game's end for us 16-15 in Atlanta.
My first game was 1961, we beat Tulane 9-0 at Ladd Stadium in Mobile on a hot, humid night. At 15 years old, that game hooked me for life on the Tide.

last game at legion field. Georgia Tech (i believe) we were down for a while then caught back up :biggrin2: and won. went to at least 1 game every year after that :biggrin2:

1986 'The Sack' row 2 in the end zone,I was 13 years old. I have two sons my oldest first game was in 07 vs Georiga, he was 9. I'm thinking about making my 6 year old first game this year vs Penn State but not sure he's old enough to remember. I think it's very important you remember the 1st game.

Indeed, it was a Sington brother. I couldn't find a recap of the Tech game. However, based on recaps of other 1959 games, I'd say it was Fred Jr. Read recaps at link below. Then, decide for yourself.

1970, Bama vs LSU at Legion Field. Bama made a good effort, but lost 14-9.

I think LSU was pretty highly rated, Bama had already lost 3 games and was on the way to a second straight 6 win season, adding a tie in the Bluebonnet Bowl. More than a few people were questioning whether the game had passed Coach Bryant by.

The next year, however, would be the start of another golden era at Bama.
Well how about that? Me too. :BigA:
