Link: Fresno State at Bama in jeopardy? (answer: no)

Re: Fresno State at Bama in jeopardy?

Isn't driving is a form of travel?

I was trying to think of a loophole. Since the ban is from California to Alabama, they would not be directly going to Alabama. They would travel from California to Georgia and then Georgia to Alabama which is different somehow.

Re: Fresno State at Bama in jeopardy?

They would fund the travel from California to Georgia but not from Georgia to Alabama. That is how I interpret the intent of the law.

At either rate, I don't think you have to worry about this game being in jeopardy.

Re: Fresno State at Bama in jeopardy?

So, travel bans are ok now?

Yeah, turns out you can when it is not just because "They're from Brownskinistan but not one of our allies of convenience in that region that are actually harboring and funding most of the terrorist we fear."

Should I blue font this?! I don't even know anymore.

Well, the theory of disparate impact would suggest that California is discriminating against brownskinistan, or more aptly blackskinistan, when they ban travel to many southern states.

Seems to me your snark is misplaced.

Re: Fresno State at Bama in jeopardy?

NCAA Hoops Tourney would be fun if they have to schedule them "Cali Schools" around games in "banned" states....

It's called connecting flights in Hartsfield. People do it all the time.

I know many don't like Clay Travis but figured I would go ahead and post his column on this.

[h=1]California Law Banning State Travel Sets Dangerous Sports Precedent[/h]

Surprisingly well written, this summation is nearly perfect:
Gays and lesbians have a national right to marry. If gays and lesbians have issues with state laws in the eight states at issue here, guess what, they can challenge those state laws and have them overturned if they violate the Constitution. They don’t need California’s help. If anything all California’s actions do is make state legislatures, governors and citizens in these eight states less likely to change their minds. Who wants to be told what to do in your state by people who don’t even live within your state’s borders? The truth is this — California’s law isn’t about changing anything, it’s about politicians scoring political points even if those points may be scored at the expense of their stated goals.

This new California law may well be unconstitutional when the courts actually examine it, but we don’t have to wait for a court ruling to know this — it’s indisputably dumb. Regardless of your political persuasion, California’s best collegiate athletes should be competing with the nation’s best athletes.

The contracted games are safe and I'm sure Fresno can find safe spaces to be cannon fodder in the future.

But, as said, what about future bowl games or basketball tournaments? If Nebraska passes some homophobic law, will that keep state schools from the College World Series?

They'll probably make some exceptions for sports, but what about recruiting? If I were in charge of some state agency there, I'd be pretty upset the football coach could go to Texas but I wasn't allowed to go there to try to get some business to open a factory in my state.

He can be very obnoxious on things, but he writes very well.

Liked his point about states working together to extradite a criminal. What if California needs to extradite a guy from one of the eight states? How's that going to happen?

He's wrong about the 1970 Alabama/USC game, predictably so. We had already started recruiting black players by the time that game was played, and Wilbur Jackson was on scholarship, but not eligible to play as he was a freshman.

I love Tennessee's response to their nonsense.

Re: Fresno State at Bama in jeopardy?

come on Audio, I know you can see the difference

I agree it is different. If California wants to ban state funded trips to states with laws they don't like, that's their right and they can live with whatever consequences it brings.

But if they make exceptions for anything other than matters of life and death or to go get some criminal, they are a bunch of hypocrites. Let them make UCLA forfeit a Final Four at Jerry World.

California schools don't need no stinkin' Texas recruits!

I read an article a couple of months ago about UCLA traveling to Tennessee to play the University of Memphis. Some official from UCLA said that they do not use state funds for the football team (or maybe football team travel). The person did say that they would honor the state's ban in the future (I guess when scheduling new games) though they don't fall under it.

Tennessee is on the naughty list for allowing counselors to op out of treating LGBT.
