Here are some notes that I gathered from the 2 1/2 quarters of A-Day that I watched:
1. Philip Ely's so similar to Greg McElroy from the eye test that it's ridiculous.
2. Christion Jones will fill in quite nicely for Marquis Maze. From his hands to his crisp route running, he looks like he's going to be a nice safety blanket for AJ going into the season.
3. At this point, Yeldon is MUCH better in space than he is going downhill...Dee Hart, too. I expect us to have a 4 RB rotation this season, much like LSU had last year. I don't expect a Heisman worthy season from any one of our backs, but I do think our productivity from the running back position will be through the roof.
4. I'm elated beyond belief that Robert Lester decided to come back for a 5th season. I think him handing off his knowledge & experience to HaHa Clinton-Dix will be invaluable (not to mention Landon Collins whenever he gets here)
5. Jeff Pagan is an absolute MONSTER. His official listing doesn't show it, but he towers over and, in some cases, dwarfs some of our other linemen. LaMichael Fanning is no pip squeak either.
6. I've read where some enjoyed the one on one with Barrett Jones & Jesse Williams, but there were a couple of times where Trey DePriest and Jalston Fowler met in the hole as they both had a full head of steam. Sounded like someone fired off a shotgun. Neither one gave any ground.
7. I think Ed Stinson is primed to have an amazing year
8. The scholarship spent on Travell Dixon is well worth it. From the listing, it seems that he & Dre Kirkpatrick with almost identical in size. Dixon is not as rangy as Dre, but he's a physical specimen out there on the corner. I don't think we'll have any trouble with press man from him.
9. Deion Belue passes the eye test.
10. Every time I see him, Vinnie Sunseri proves me absolutely wrong about my initial thought of his scholarship offer being a piece of nepotism (because his father was on the staff at the time). I enjoy being proven wrong in this case.
11. Adrian Hubbard has one of the quickest first steps I've seen in some time. He'll have at least 10 sacks this season.
12. This season, I think the 2011 class will put its stamp on the program. From Clinton-Dix to Hart to Cyrus to Pagan to Dial to Calloway
13. Speaking of Calloway: that move to H-Back for him....exhibit A of why Coach Saban is who he is. Brent looked comfortable there and him being somewhat of a safety valve there gives him the opportunity to do what he wanted to do when he got here: be a ball-carrier in space
14. Double edged-sword with the WR corps. No single WR separated himself from the others (from any of the DBs either for that matter). But that might be a good thing. Not having a "go-to" receiver will force the QB to go through his progressions and use every weapon at his disposal.
14a. But with that being said...For the 1 millionth and 1st time, Amari Cooper & Chris Black....get used to hearing those names
15. AJ's not the holder on field goals anymore. Mandell was the holder today. At least the ones that I paid attention to. Not sure how that's gonna play in the regular season. At least with AJ there, it left the door open to us faking it. Not sure I wanna see Mandell's arm.
16. Foster put it in the end zone consistently. Nice.
17. I know he was going with a bum shoulder, so it's hard to get a great read on P. Sims. He did great finding the open man underneath on certain plays and on some plays (I had a great vantage point to see plays developing to know what the purpose of the play was), when the primary man took too long to get open, he still stared down the primary and threw into tight coverage. Hopefully we can get that shoulder back to 100% and he can get on up to speed in the event that we need him for full-time duty.
18. Finally...it's always great to have two former All-American linebackers (Nico Johnson & CJ Mosely), who could easily be on their ways to the NFL right now, to anchor your defense. It was especially good to see CJ out there going full throttle after that nasty injury he suffered in the BCSNCG. He was moving fluidly as if nothing had ever happened.
EDIT: One more thing...they updated the Tradition video that plays in pre-game, and it pretty much plays like a Trent Richardson highlight film...seriously...Trent gets a LOT of run on that new one. Not sure if they'll roll with that one in the regular season or if it was just for today. Still, seems like Trent's long run vs. Ole Miss last season and Cody's block vs. UT got the biggest pops. Also, in the "OOOOOH" section of the video (the one where they show Biscuit destroying Burlein), they've added 3 or 4 clips of Zeus and Upshaw with OOH and AAH worthy big hits. Think I saw Barron in there too
