I think this topic has been discussed but just saw this article and thought it was an interesting look into current issues while also showing the historical context like the below from the article:

“They didn’t say they opposed integration; they said they were for “state’s rights.”

They didn’t say they didn’t want their children sitting next to Black or brown kids when opposing desegregation of public schools; they said they were against “forced busing.””

You start out in 1954 by saying, “N,,,,,, n....., n.........” By 1968 you can’t say “n...........”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “N........., n..........”

Lee Atwater, republican political consultant to GHWB.

They still say "States Rights" to which I typically reply "States rights to do what, exactly" usually shuts that one down quick

First debate is tonight and even without Agent Orange in attendance, I predict this will have all the grace and tact of the Three Stooges in a haunted house. I also predict more people will be tuned in to Tucker Carlson's interview of Trump than there will be watching Fox News. Needless to say, I won't be watching either one.

FWIW, I just asked my last hygiene patient, a known Republican and Trump supporter, if he was going to watch the debate tonight. He said he will watch and is pulling for Nikki Haley, and he really likes her. I said, "So you're not voting for Trump." "No, January 6 was a bridge too far for me."

Perhaps there is a chink in the armor after all.

Ask him again a year from now.
